Abstract: Most colloidal samples have a non-negligible imaginary component of the effective refractive index due to scattering and absorption losses. In this paper we analyze the requirements on a differential refractometer so that it can be used to measure the real part of the effective refractive index increment in colloids for particle size analysis.

Abstract: In this work we show that in many practical situations it is possible to obtain the dielectric constant of coatings on plane conductive substrates by means of capacitance measurements with a single electrode without precise knowledge of the thickness.

Abstract: We address the problem of measuring the refractive index of biological materials. We limit our analysis to the case of colloids and consider the use of common automatic critical-angle refractometers to measure their effective refractive index. We provide rough guidelines to when these refractometers will incur in large errors and alternative techniques should be used.
