Abstract: The effect of varying heat inputs (20, 100, 200 kJ/cm) on the microstructures and toughness of the simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone of a Nb-Ti microalloyed pipeline steel were investigated utilizing optical and electron microscope. Results showed that the impact toughness of the coarse-grained heat-affected zone maintained a higher level at the heat input of 20 and 100 kJ/cm, whereas it dropped to a much lower level at the heat input of 200 kJ/cm. The good toughness was attributed to the grain refinement and the homogenous distribution of fine and elongated martensite/austenite constituents. The deterioration of toughness for high heat input simulated welding was mainly caused by the coarse bainitic microstructure and massive martensite/austenite constituents.

Abstract: Nb-free and Nb-bearing medium carbon steels treated by quenching-partitioning-tempering process were investigated. The microstructural observations and hardness were analyzed by optical microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and hardness test. Results show that when quenched at 210oC and partitioned at 450oC ultra fine-grained microstructures of martensite, retained austenite and carbides are obtained. The Nb-bearing steel has finer martensite lath, more volume fraction of retained austenite and higher hardness compared with that of Nb-free steel. The addition of Nb is responsible for not only the precipitation strengthening but also the more volume fraction of retained austenite during quenching-partitioning-tempering process.

Abstract: The effects of process parameters on microstructural evolution and grain refinement are determined in a Nb-Ti microalloyed high strength dual phase steel. With the increase of cooling rate, final microstructures change from a mixture of acicular ferrite (AF)+martensite/retained austenite (M/A) to conventional bainite (CB)+M/A. Accordingly, the morphology of M/A constituent changes from an equiaxed island in AF to an elongated interlath in CB. The length and width of bainite packets become smaller with the increase of cooling rate and the decrease of deformation temperature. The length of individual bainitic ferrite plates within the packets become smaller with the increase of cooling rate and the decrease of deformation temperature, whereas the thickness of them varies slightly with them. The optimized relaxing time on grain refinement is 60 s. The reheating temperature, reduction ratio and interrupt temperature has no obvious effect on the formation of dual phase of acicular ferrite or bainite and M/A.

Abstract: The effect of Nb microalloying on microstructure transformation of coarse-grained heat-affected zone of high strength low alloy steels were investigated utilizing different heat input welding simulation. For the low-Nb steel, the microstructures of coarse-grained heat-affected zone mainly consisted of acicular ferrite, bainite and grain boundary ferrite for small heat input welding; the amount of acicular ferrite decreased whereas grain boundary ferrite, polygonal ferrite and pearlite increased with increasing heat input. In constrast, for the high-Nb steel, granular bainite was the dominant microstructure. The formation of granular bainitic microstructure was associated with the solid solution of Nb, which suppressed ferrite transformation and promoted the formation of granular bainite. The hardness of coarse-grained heat-affected zone increased with increasing Nb content, and decreased with decreasing heat input, which was attributed to the microstructural change.
