Abstract: Many interesting studies on the utilization of wastes produced in different human activities (urban, agricultural and industrial) have been carried out with the goals to reduce, to recycle, to reuse or to recovery: the R4 strategy. Many of these waste contains high amount of silicoaluminates, making them suitable for alkali activation to become one of the most promising binders for the future. Other type of wastes, even if hazardous, such as incinerator fly ash, electric arc furnace dust, lead smelting slag, etc. can be easily added as minor components to the geopolymer matrix for being immobilized as either cations or anions or both.

Abstract: Virgin raw materials can be partially replaced by glass waste in order to reduce the environmental impact being its recycling a significant problem for municipalities worldwide. In Italy in 2013, approximately 1,600,000 tons of container glass have been collected but it was not possible to recycle all of them in the glass melting process.This work is focused on the valorization of glass waste as raw material in new cement and ceramic products, to convert it from an environmental and economic burden to a profitable, added-value resource in the formulation of new mixes. Several parameters, such as grinding, forming, firing, etc. have been studied.It has been optimized the grinding and the reclaiming step of waste to obtain an alternative raw material for hot and cold consolidation processes. Chemical, physical and mechanical properties of products were carried out. The results show new real possibilities to use high amounts of glass waste as an alternative raw material in products consolidated either by hot or cold techniques, reducing the management problems of the glass waste.

Abstract: Electric arc furnace slag (EAF-S), coming from a steel productive plant in Italy, has been used as new source for geopolymers synthesis. The slag has been geopolymerized alone and with different content of metakaolin (MK) with the aim to investigate if EAF-S content plays a role in geopolymerization process. Mechanical properties results and microstructure analysis highlight that the optimum weight ratio MK/EAF-S to be used as starting materials is 40/60, 30/70, 20/80. Moreover EAF-S, when used with MK, directly participates in the formation of calcium-rich alumino-silicate gels.

Abstract: Four samples of Ba-exchanged zeolite A, bearing 0.27, 0.43, 0.58 and 0.74 meq/g Na residual amounts, were thermally treated in the temperature range 200-1500 °C for times up to 28 hours. The same samples were pressed at 30 and 60 MPa to manufacture cylindrical pellets, which were thermally treated at 1300 °C for 5 hours. Thermally treated materials were characterized by room temperature XRD. The sequence of thermal transformations that Ba-exchanged zeolite A undergoes (zeolite ® amorphous phase ® hexacelsian ® monoclinic celsian) and the strong mineralizing action developed by Na are confirmed. Pressing the Ba-exchanged zeolite A powder-like samples to obtain cylindrical pellets is found to expedite the sluggish final phase transition hexacelsian ® monoclinic celsian. The optimum residual Na content of Ba-exchanged zeolite A to be transformed into monoclinic celsian is assessed to range between 0.27 and 0.43 meq/g.
