Abstract: The influence of severe plastic deformation on structural materials has been actively studied in recent years. Undoubtedly is the positive influence of this method on strength characteristics of materials. In addition, it is very interesting to influence of the severe plastic deformation on the mechanisms of fracture. One of the most common methods of severe plastic deformation is equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP). In this paper, the influence of different modes of ECAP on the strength of structural steel was studied. Also, the destruction of steel at different test temperatures was studied in detail. It is shown that the ECAP increases the strength of steel almost twice, but the plasticity of steel is reduced, which leads to fragility. Quenching can remove the negative impact of the ECAP on toughness of the steel and will increase the impact strength several times.

Abstract: Severe plastic deformation is a well known procedure for fabrication considerable grain refinement in metal materials. Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is one of these severe plastic deformation techniques which allows the receiving of the bulk ultrafine grained (UFG) metals. It is well known that the ECAP method leads to significant improvement of strength of investigated materials, but the fracture mechanisms of UFG metals at low temperature are not enough studied. The investigation was performed on low-alloy constructional steel 09G2S (GOST) after application of ECAP. Fracture toughness tests were performed on Charpy impact testing specimens at low temperature. The experiments demonstrate that ECAP treatment has the effect on increasing of fracture resistance of steel 09G2S at low temperature.

Abstract: The steel St3 was processed by equal channel angular pressing. The structure and properties of the steel after two ECAP passes were determined. The different routes (Bc and C) resulted in different microstructure evolution during the equal channel angular pressing. It has been shown that equal channel angular pressing is a very suitable method for produce materials with good mechanical properties.
