Abstract: The reduction in energy usage is proven able to minimize the carbon dioxide emission. By promoting energy efficient practices at Rest and Service areas (RSAs) along the highway, it is able to decreasing the carbon dioxide emission. This paper highlights the outcome of a study aims to compare the energy consumption of the RSA that utilized HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) and non-HVAC. Thus, the study extends to determine the potential retrofitting of RSAs that responsive to more energy reduction. Data collection conducted at the 6 RSAs in PLUS highway, Johor Region of Malaysia which are Pagoh RSA (Northbound & Southbound), Machap (Northbound & Southbound), and Gelang Patah (Northbound & Southbound). The results show that the energy consumption at Machap Northbound RSA is considered very high in comparison to the other RSAs in Johor Region that not utilized full HVAC. Thus, it was proven that the usage of full HVAC system contributing to the increase of energy consumption at the RSA. Simultaneously, the carbon emission is also directional proportion to the energy consumption at the RSAs. Some retrofitting is potential to be applied for more energy efficiency in order to support the maximum energy reduction at the RSAs. In example, reducing the number of air-condition unit at the café is significant to be taken to reduce energy wastage for all 6 RSAs. In conclusion, energy efficient RSAs can be achieved by applying good energy management, installing best energy saving appliance and implementing passive design strategy.

Abstract: Green building is building that the focus is to maximize the energy efficiency and resources used. While, retrofitting is the process of renovate or refurnish the existing building. Therefore by retrofit existing buildings that comply with green building requirement, it improves the environmental attributes of the buildings. In Malaysia, existing buildings and its communities contribute over 40% of green house gases to the environment. This paper describes a study that explores the potential to retrofit existing campus buildings that response to sustainable green building standard. A validation survey was carried out and the data collected was analysed using SPSS in order to confirm the significance of retrofitting Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) buildings toward green building initiative. The results show that all the twenty eight identified green elements recorded average index of higher than 3.5 which means that there is significant needs to retrofit the existing buildings to green buildings. This study concludes that it is urgently need for the campus to response to green building requirements in order to achieve higher energy effeciency and this can be done through effective etrofitting of existing buildings.

Abstract: Past earthquake damages to road and highway structures such as bridges and tunnels demonstrate that it can severely disrupt network performance. These types of lifeline damages negatively impact the economy of the region, as well as post-earthquake emergency response and recovery. The seismic performance of these structures is almost difficult to model, because performance is a function of design, age, and local geotechnical conditions. In addition, earthquake intensity is also highly uncertain. Since the vulnerability of transportation network is not a rapidly quantifiable concept, and road networks are vulnerable to many events, many of researchers tried to find acceptable definitions in this regard. This pilot study presents a Seismic Vulnerability Score Assignment Model (SVSA) applying linear regression technique for two types of road structures; namely bridges and tunnels as samples. This model helps the project managers and decision makers rank the road structures based on seismic vulnerability scores easily.
