Abstract: Earthquakes pose a threat to large-scale container cranes. Previous earthquakes damaged many container cranes, which had a significant impact on business interruption losses of the port. In this paper, a container crane’s seismic response is analyzed in ANSYS. First, a finite element model of a container crane is developed. Then, based on the equations of structural dynamics, the four most important modes of the container crane are extracted. Finally, a time history analysis is conducted to obtain the displacements of some critical nodes on the crane model under the excitation of an earthquake wave. The result of this paper provides a reference for the seismic design of container cranes.

Abstract: This paper presents an approach to evaluate the structural fatigue life of port cranes. Based on a testing of 40t/45m container crane in a port of China, the stress time-history collection, data processing, the determination of S-N curve and the distribution of the load amplitude is analyzed in detail. Finally, the modified linear cumulative damage law is employed to evaluate the remaining safety service life of the container crane. The result of this study can be a reference for the anti-fatigue structural design of cranes, and it also provides a guideline for ports’ management and maintenance departments to make maintenance plans for port cranes.

Abstract: As port cranes becoming larger, the electricity and other energy they consumed increase significantly. The research on energy saving of port cranes is increasingly hot nowadays. This paper first discusses the latest research activities on the energy saving measures of cranes. Then, taking the quayside container crane as an example, the measuring method for its energy consumption is presented and analyzed. Finally, an energy saving device for port cranes is designed to convert the motor’s no useful working energy into electricity for lighting. The design, structures and working process of this device are described in detail.
