Abstract: A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1-(3-thienyl)-2-(2- n-butyl-5-hydroxymethyl-3-thienyl) perfluoroncyclopentene (1a), was synthesized and its optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism and fluorescence in solution and in PMMA film were investigated. This compound exhibited remarkable photochromism, changing from colorless to pink after irradiation with UV light in hexane solution. The new diarylethene also exhibited relatively strong fluorescence by photoirradiation in solution and in PMMA film, and the fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism upon irradiation 297 nm light and its closed-ring isomer showed almost no fluorescence

Abstract: A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2,5-dimethyl-3-thienyl)-2-(2 -methyl-5-p-tolyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (1) was synthesized, and its photochromic and fluorescence properties were investigated. The results showed the compound exhibited good photochromism in hexane solution and in PMMA amorphous film with alternating irradiation by UV/Vis light, the maxima absorption of its closed-ring isomer 1c are 541 nm and 551 nm respectively. The open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1 exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at 360 nm in hexane solution (5 × 10-5 mol/L) when excited at 305 nm. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism upon irradiation with 297 nm light. The fluorescence intensity of diarylethene 1o also depended on the concentration. When the concentration of diarylethene 1 in hexane increase from 1 × 10-6 mol/L to 1 × 10-3 mol/L, the fluorescence intensity of the open-ring isomer become strong first, then become weak

Abstract: A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1-(2-methylnaphthyl)-2-(2-n-butyl-5-formyl-3-thienyl) perfluorocyclopentene (1o), was synthesized and its optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism in solution as well as in poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) amorphous films, and the fluorescence spectra of diarylethene 1o were investigated. The diarylethene can be potentially used as holographic optical recording medium

Abstract: A novel photochromic diarylethene with thiophene and benzene compound, 1-{[2-methyl-5-(1, 3-dioxolane)-3-thienyl]}-2-(2-cyanophenyl)perfluorocyclopentene(1a) has been synthesized. Its photochemical properties, including photochromic behavior and fluorescent features, have been investigated in detail. The compound showed good photochromism both in solution and in PMMA. The diarylethene exhibited a fluorescence switches along with the photochromism from open-ring isomers to closed-ring isomers. When irradiated by UV light, the photocyclization reaction was occurred and the emission intensity of the diarylethene decreased significantly, due to producing the non-fluorescence closed-ring isomers. The back irradiation by appropriate wavelength visible light regenerated its open-ring isomers and recovered the original emission intensity.

Abstract: A novel photochromic hybrid diarylethene based on both isoxazole and cyano moieties was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also investigated. This compound exhibited good photochromism and functioned as a fluorescence switch upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light both in solution and in PMMA film. Using this diarylethene 1c as optical storage was performed successfully.

Abstract: A new photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2-ethylbenzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)-2-(2-cyanophenyl) perfluorocyclopentene (1o), was synthesized, and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were investigated. This compound exhibited reversible photochromism and fluorescence photoswitches both in solution and in PMMA films. Using diarylethene 1c/PMMA film as recording medium, optical recording was performed successfully.

Abstract: A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1-(2,5-dimethylisoxazolyl)-2-[(2-n-butyl-5-formylthiophenyl)] perfluoroncyclopentene (1a), was synthesized and its optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism in solution as well as in poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) amorphous films, and the fluorescence spectra of diarylethene 1a was investigated. The photochromic reaction kinetics indicated that the cyclization process of 1a belongs to the zeroth order reaction and the cycloreversion process belongs to the first order reaction.Using diarylethene 1/PMMA film as recording medium and a linearly polarized 633 nm laser diode for recording and readout, polarization multiplexed image recording can be carried out in this film, which illustrated that the diarylethene can be potentially used as holographic optical recording medium.

Abstract: A unsymmetrical diarylethene derivative bearing both indole and phenyl moieties was synthesized. At the same time, its photochromic properties and fluorescence switch were investigated in detail. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, undergoing reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light in solution, and its absorption maxima were observed at 625 nm in hexane, upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light. The fluorescence intensity of diarylethene decreased dramatically along with the photochromism from open-ring isomer to closed-ring isomer upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light in PMMA. In hexane solution, the open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1 exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at 439 nm when excited at 385 nm.This new photochromic system also exhibited remarkable optical storage character.

Abstract: An unsymmetrical diarylethene derivative bearing both benzothienyl and thienyl moieties, in which a malononitrile group was substituted at the 5-position of the thienyl ring, was synthesized. This compound undergo a reversible electrocyclic rearrangement, generating strongly colored closed-ring isomer upon irradiation with UV-light which show nonfluorescence, while exposure to light in the visible range triggers the cycloreversion to the colorless open-ring form that exhibits strong fluorescence properties. This properties of molecular photochromism were developed that showed both photo switches and fluorescence switches. The erasable and rewritable photo-images on this photochromic diarylethene were successfully demonstrated. This developments are crucial for fundamental research and eventual technical application for high-density optical data storage.

Abstract: A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1-(2-methyl-benzothiophenyl)- 2-(2-methyl-5-(2-chlorophenyl))perfluoroncyclopentene (1a), was synthesized and its optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism in solution as well as in poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) amorphous films, fluorescences and the fluorescence spectra of diarylethene 1a depended on the concentration were investigated. Using diarylethene 1/PMMA film as recording medium and a linearly polarized 633 nm laser diode for recording and readout, polarization multiplexed image recording can be carried out in this film, which illustrated that the diarylethene can be potentially used as holographic optical recording medium.
