Abstract: In order to reduce manufacturing cost, a methodology of accuracy synthesis for machine tool was recommended by combining both machining cost and Least Square method. Weighted coefficients representing the machining difficulty of manufacturing processes were introduced. 3PRS/UPS redundant parallel kinematic mechanism (3PRS/UPS PKM) was taken as an example, and its component tolerances were derived by the proposed method. Comparing with conventional method, the component tolerances were allocated reasonably. A further tolerance allocation for spherical and rotational joints was studied in detail. And hence, the producibility of component was improved and the manufacturing cost was reduced. The results showed that the proposed method was capable of producing tolerance allocations economically and accurately.

Abstract: To analyze effects of singularity on parallel manipulator, the Jacobian matrixes were introduced as the indexes for analyzing the 3UPS/S parallel machine. The relationship between the velocity Jacobian matrix and the force-transformation matrix was established, and their equivalence was verified through the determinant and condition number’ reciprocal of the matrixes. Effects of singularity on motion accuracy, actuator forces and constrained forces were investigated within the nutation angle’range. The result showed that velocity analysis and mechanical analysis were consistent for 3UPS/S parallel machine in the aspect of singularity, and proved that the accuracy and actuator force properties were deteriorated when approach to singularity. The approach could be applied to other parallel manipulators in the research on singular problem as a reference.

Abstract: In this paper, a Drill Point Simulation System (DPSS) which is being developed at Northeastern University is presented. By means of DPSS, the geometric models of the helical drill points were shown after inputting their design parameters. Then, the grinding parameters of the helical drill points were produced. According to the grinding parameters, the helical drill points were ground by the SD helical drill point grinder which was developed at Northeastern University. Furthermore, drilling tests were performed on aluminum sheet workpieces to investigate drilling performance of the helical drill points. In addition, the relationships between the geometric parameters of helical drill points and their grinding parameters also were derived.
