Abstract: This work investigates the relationship between the creep-fatigue life and ultrasonic test of
creep-fatigue damage. Under the creep-fatigue interaction, the main cause of life reduction is the
initiation and growth of microvoid with increasing hold time. The number/size of microvoid/cavity,
the fraction of cavity area varied with the hold time. Therefore, the life evaluation using the microvoid
with the variation of hold time is very informative for safety of components in power plants. In this
study, using the heat resisting alloy, P122 steel for USC (ultra super critical) power plant, the
creep-fatigue tests with various hold times and their ultrasonic inspection were carried out for the
purpose of evaluation for creep-fatigue life. The results obtained by Rayleigh surface wave of
backscattered ultrasound were compared and analyzed with the experimental parameters. The good
agreement between the experimental life and the predicted life was obtained.

Abstract: This study was aimed at developing an effective method and a system for on-line health
monitoring of pipes in nuclear power plants by using ultrasonic guided waves. For this purpose we
developed a multi-channel ultrasonic guided wave system for a long-range inspection of pipes and a
few techniques which can effectively find defects in pipes. To validate the developed system we
performed a series of experiments and analyzed the results.

Abstract: The propagation characteristics of the back-reflected Rayleigh surface wave in chemical vapor deposit (CVD) diamond coated specimens were investigated experimentally using the ultrasonic backward radiation measurement. The deliberated delaminations produced between the coating layer and the substrate decreased Rayleigh surface wave velocity. This initial experimental
result obtained in the present study demonstrates the high potential of the backward radiated ultrasound as a tool for nondestructive evaluation of very thin CVD diamond coating layer.

Abstract: Eddy current testing (ECT) is widely used in in-service inspection as well as pre-service inspection of the steam generator (SG) tubes in nuclear power plant of pressurized water reactor type. The interpretation of ECT signals, however, is truly a difficult task so that the reliability enhancement of signal interpretation is strongly desired. An enhanced interpretation tools for ECT signals have been developed by the novel combination of neural networks and finite element modeling for quantitative flaw characterization SG tubes. A database was constructed using synthetic ECT signals generated by the finite element models and principal component analysis (PCA) was adopted in order to optimize the feature set of ECT signals. The improvement in the performances by the features with PCA and the excellent performance for the experimental ECT signals demonstrate the high potential of the developed inversion tools for reliable interpretation of eddy current signals. To explore the possibility of applying the developed approach in practical inspection, we developed an automated system (laboratory prototype) that can acquire experimental ECT signals from SG tubes and carry out the quantitative flaw characterization in a real time fashion by applying the approach developed in the present work.

Abstract: The elastic waves in the isotropic plate are dispersive waves with the characteristics of Lamb wave, however, S0 symmetric mode is less dispersive in the frequency region less than the first cut-off frequency. In the anisotropic plates such as CFRP plates, the propagation velocities vary with the directions as well as the dispersion of the Lamb wave, and the phase velocity direction does not accord with the group velocity direction. The phase velocity direction is equivalent the wave vector direction, while the group velocity direction is equivalent the energy flow direction. In this work, the group velocity dispersion curves were obtained by the dispersion relation of the Lamb wave in unidirectional CFRP plate with an orthotropic structure. The group velocities of the S0 symmetric mode in the frequency region less than the first cut-off frequency were corrected by applying the slowness surface. The propagation velocities of Lamb wave were decided by measuring the arrival time of the Lamb wave signals received with the two pinducers varying the propagating direction in the laminated unidirectional CFRP plates of 8, 16 and 24 plies having a volume fraction of 67%. The measured velocities are better agreement with corrected group velocity curve, except near the fiber direction at the cusp region. When the propagating direction is not accorded with the principal axis,
the direction of the group velocities inclines toward the fiber direction in the unidirectional CFRP plates, suggesting that the energy propagates preferentially toward fiber direction.

Abstract: Ultrasonic guided waves have been widely employed for the long range inspection of
structures such as plates and pipes. In ultrasonic guided waves, however, there are numerous modes with different wave velocities, so that the generation and detection of the appropriate wave mode of the guided wave is one of key techniques in the application of guided waves. In the present work, mode tuning using an array transducer was investigated with hardware implements. For this purpose, 8-channel ultrasonic pulser and their controller which enables sequential activation of each channels with given time delay were developed. Transmitter tuning, group velocity measurements, reciver tuning, mode identification and long range transmission testing were carried out. As a result, the selective tuning of wave mode can be achieved by changing the time interval between adjacent elements of an array transducer.

Abstract: In this paper, the dispersion curves of a bent cylindrical pipe are obtained by using the 3-dimensional finite element modeling and 2-dimenstional Fourier transform. The transient responses of the bent pipe are calculated by using a general-purpose finite element program, and the displacements are extracted at a series of sequential points as a function of spatial position and time, u(x,t). Then 2-dimentional FFT of u (x,t) offers U (k,ω), the relation between wave number and angular frequency so that the phase velocity and group velocity can be calculated. In addition, verification of the result is made by the mode identification using wavelet transform. The modes invoked by both methods agree very well.

Abstract: The application of nondestructive evaluation to creep-fatigue damage was examined in this paper. Generally, as the hold time of static load increases, the degradation of material becomes more rapid and the creep-fatigue life decreases. Therefore, in the evaluation of creep-fatigue strength and life of high-pressure vessel such as main steam pipe at high temperature is very important in power plants. In this study, the creep-fatigue behavior of P92 steel was evaluated nondestructively by the backscattered ultrasound using the creep-fatigue specimens. The results obtained by Rayleigh surface wave of backscattered ultrasound were compared and analyzed with the experimental parameters. Also, the relation between the SDA (slope of degraded area) and creep-fatigue life was examined. From the result of nondestructive test, we suggest that SDA would be used as the new parameter for
the evaluation of creep-fatigue damage. As the degradation increased, the SDA decreased and also the creep-fatigue life decreased.
