Abstract: A new symmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2-methyl-5-formyl)-2-(2- cyanophenyl) perfluorocyclopentene(1a), was synthesized, and its photochromic properties were investigated in detail. The compound exhibited good photochromism both in solution and in PMMA film with alternating irradiation by UV/VIS light, and the maxima absorption of its closed-ring isomer 1b are 544 and 549 nm, respectively. The photochromism properties of 1a diarylethene show good photochromism in hexane and in PMMA amorphous film. Steady state fluorescence studies indicated that 1a diarylethene is higher fluorescent in the open-ring isomer, but there almost no fluorescence in the closed-ring isomer in PMMA amorphous film. The diarylethene 1a has promising application for photo-switching, fluorescence-switching which can use for data storage.

Abstract: A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1-(2,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazol)-2-[2-methyl-5-(2-chlorophenyl) -3-thienyl] perfluorocyclopentene (1a) has been synthesized. Its photochromic properties in solution and PMMA film were investigated. Diarylethene 1a changed the color from colorless to red upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 515 nm in hexane and at 526 nm in PMMA film, The results demonstrated that it can be potentially used as polarization holographic optical recording medium.

Abstract: A new unsymmetrical diarylethene derivative 1-(2,4-dimethyl-isoxazol-3-yl)-2-(2-methyl-5-formyl-3-thienyl) perfluoroyclopentene (1a) was synthesized. Its photochromic and fluorescent properties were investigated, respectively. The results showed that this diarylethene exhibited reversible photochromism, the ring-closed isomer absorption maxima were observed at 519 nm and 527 nm in hexane and PMMA film, respectively. In hexane solution, diarylethene 1 showed good fluorecence switching characters with 309 nm light excited.

Diarylethene 1a changed the color from colorless to pink upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 518 nm in hexane and at 527 nm in PMMA film, respectively. In hexane solution, the open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1 exhibited relatively fluorescence at 386 nm when excited at 309 nm.

Abstract: A photochromic diarylethene bearing a six-membered aryl unit 1-[(2,5-dimethyl-3-thienyl)]-2-[2-methy-4-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-phenyl]perfluoroyclopentene (1a) was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also investigated in detail. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to red after irradiation with UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 521 and 536nm in hexane and PMMA film, respectively. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism upon irradiation with 297 nm light in hexane.

Its photochromic properties in solution and PMMA film were investigated. Diarylethene 1a changed the color from colorless to blue upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 581 nm in hexane and at 582 nm in PMMA film, The results demonstrated that it can be potentially used as polarization holographic optical recording medium.
