Abstract: The Abundant production of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) can be utilized to make high value product, such as alkyd resins for coating materials. In this research, PFAD was reacted with glycerol and phthalic anhydride at various composition and temperature for 4-5 hours, employing one-step and two-step methods. The alkyd resin product was analyzed its acid value, iodine number, viscosity of 5% solution in xylene, and curing possibility with styrene monomer. The results showed that reaction temperature at 180° - 220°C influenced the acid value, but not significant for iodine number, and had no effect to molecular weight of alkyd resin product. Phthalic anhydride had more effect upon acid number than PFAD. Iodine number of the alkyd resin product was generally low, which indicated that this alkyd resin could not be used as drying oil. All alkyd resins produced either by one and two steps could only harden with 20% alkyd resin - 80% styrene using MEKP initiator. Viscosity of 5% alkyd resin solution in xylene was around 11-14 cp, independent of composition and reaction temperature.

Abstract: The epoxy resin (ER) and 2,3-epoxypropoxypropytrimethoxysilane (KH-560) were used to prepare alkyd resin (AR) insulating coating. The modified waterborne alkyd resin insulating coating was prepared. The dynamic mechanical properties, thermal properties and electrical properties of the composites were characterized by DMA, TG, et al. The results show that the tertiary amine has a good catalyzing effect for this reaction. When the mass ratio of AR with ER is 1 : 1, the glass transform temperature Tg of material is 64.6 °C. When the content of KH-560 is 5% mass fraction of the alkyd resin, the Tg of composites increase 5.6 °C, the initial degradation temperature increased by 63.78 °C; The rs and rv of composites are between 109 ~ 1012 MΩ; the ε and tanδ is between 0.6553 ~ 0.9975 and 0.0025-0.0036, respectively. The pencil hard degree and the impact strength of coating film are all over 5H and 40N, respectively.

Abstract: Polyurethane-acrylic composite emulsion was synthesized by swelling polymerization with aqueous polyurethane dispersion as seed, and acrylic as monomers. The obtained polyurethane-acrylic (PUA) composite emulsion were characterized by means of IR spectra, and the results showed that the obtained emulsion was hybrid emulsion of polyurethane and acrylic, which had smaller particle size and higher viscosity and was more suitable for the preparation of ink. The obtained water-based PUA emulsion and alkyd resins were used as ink binder. The obtained water-based ink had good water resistance, color density, gloss and friction fastness.

Abstract: Alkyd resins were cheap and can perform good properties depend on the modification. In this study, commercial alkyd resins were blended with various proportions of phthalic anhydride and oil on solid. The solvent system showed a clear single phase solution and a clear coat of binder. All the blends were applied on duplex paperboards. The evaluation of coat ability in terms of drying time, adhesion, glossiness, rub resistance, and physical appearance were investigated.

Abstract: Alkyd resin dispersions are used in the paint industry as the basis for the new generation of environmentally friendly gloss paints. This research based on two-component seed oil soybean oil and castor oil to synthesis high-efficiency modified alkyd resin. The experimental conditions are the mass ratio of soybean oil with castor oil is 2:1, 55% degree of oil, Ni(OH)2 as the catalyst and 210°C~220°C for alcohol solution reaction, 220°C for esterification under the protection of nitrogen. The experimental results show that the product non-drying days are more than 30 days, acid value is 6.6, the migration is 1.2%, adhesion is one level, flexibility is 0.5, chroma value is 8.

Abstract: Soybean oil-based alkyd resin was prepared using soy-based polyol, maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride. The soy-based polyol was obtained through the epoxidization of soybean oil, followed by ring-opening with methanol and, the hydroxyl values of soybean oil-based polyols used in this reaction is 169.93 mgKOH/g. In the reactions of soy-based polyol, maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride, the molar ratio of hydroxyl value is equal to carboxyl value and the molar ratio of maleic anhydride to phthalic anhydride is 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2, respectively. 1% hydroquinone based on total reactants was used as inhibitor of polymerization, 1% dibutyltin oxide was used as catalyst.

Abstract: The results of a study into the design for manufacture of a chemical batch reactor for the synthesis of alkyd resin destined for surface-coating production is presented. The procedures for determining the key geometrical parameters of the reactor are explained. This paper presents the application of fertile innovation to the design and development of chemical batch reactor that uses boiler steam in conjunction with heat from efficient wood stove to achieve constant supply of heat, sustained at about 2500C. The design concept is governed by an analytical model developed and which specifies the optimal reactor geometries that would afford efficient heat and mass transfer. Residence time for our reactor is five (5) hours as against eight (8) hours associated with laboratory scale reactors. The performance of the chemical batch reactor during a preliminary test-run was evaluated in terms of the well over 3000C processing temperature achieved and from the result rises hope eternal.

Abstract: There are several reasons why industrial engineers need to optimize process layout designs. This paper points out the justification and discusses the qualitative and quantitative techniques involved in the determination of an optimal process layout for a pilot alkyd resin and its end products manufacturing system. It also spotlights practical decisions required for achieving optimality in the design process. It is the belief of the authors that with some improvements on the final layout, our proposed layout will be a ballpark of eco-factory moored on green manufacturing.
