Abstract: The effect of the surface compressive stress (CS) on the wettability of the chemically strengthened glasses on air side and tin side was investigated. The wettability of the air side of the raw glass is better than the tin side. After chemical strengthening, the surface energy of the air side decrease with the decreasing of the CS while the tin side is just the opposite. These results demonstrated that the wettability of the chemically strengthened aluminosilicate glass could be controlled by the compressive stress.

Abstract: The effect of the annealing temperature (390°C, 410 °Cand 430°C) on the stress relaxation of air side and tin side of ion exchanged glasses was investigated. The annealing time dependence of stress at different temperature can be well fitted by a second order exponential function. The stress relaxation rate on tin side is larger than air side at the ion exchange temperature (410°C) or below (390°C) but smaller above the ion exchange temperature (430°C). The depths of stress layer (DOL) of all ion exchanged glasses increase with the increasing of annealing time and the DOL on air side is always larger than tin side. These provide useful information for subsequent treatment of ion exchanged glasses.

Abstract: The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of alumina doped with rare earth oxide and rare earth-aluminosilicate glass has been investigated in order to understand better the impact of rare earth addition on hardness and fracture toughness. The aims of the present work are to examine the possibly beneficial effects of selected rare earth oxide added to alumina by two different routes in enhancing mechanical properties. The specific systems considered in this work were as follows: liquid phase sintered alumina containing RE2O3 (RE = La, Y) and RE2O3 – Al2O3 – SiO2 glassy phase up to 5 wt. %. The Vickers hardness and fracture toughness have been compared with the undoped alumina.
