Abstract: Aluminum honeycomb is a lightweight material with high strength and strong capacity of energy absorption. In order to research energy absorption characteristic of aluminum honeycomb material, quasi-static and dynamic out-of-plane compression experiments are carried out on a double-layer aluminum honeycomb impact attenuator of one FSAE racing car. Plateau stress (PS), specific load (SL), mass specific energy absorption (MSEA), volume specific energy absorption (VSEA) and other parameters of the tested aluminum honeycomb under both quasi-static and dynamic impact conditions are analyzed. The results show that the tested aluminum honeycomb impact attenuator has good energy absorption capacity to meet the collision requirements. Furthermore, under the condition of dynamic impact, the energy absorption capacity of this honeycomb improves compared with that under the condition of quasi static compression.

Abstract: This paper outlines a finite element procedure for predicting the mechanical behaviour under bending of sandwich panels consisting of aluminium skins and aluminium honeycomb core. To achieve a rapid and accurate stress analysis, the sandwich panels have been modelled using shell elements for the skins and the core. Sandwich panels were modelled by a three-dimensional finite element model implemented in Abaqus/Standard. By this model the influence of the components on the behaviour of the sandwich panel under bending load was evaluated. Numerical characterization of the sandwich structure, is confronted to both experimental and homogenization technique results.

Abstract: The present study investigates numerically the compressive residual strength of indented sandwich composite panel. The composite is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) face sheets and aluminum honeycomb core. The sandwich is loaded under quasi-static condition and along out-of-plane direction. A commercial finite element analysis software ABAQUS is used. The results show that the indented composite retains significant amount of strength after indentation. And, the post-indentation strength of the composite is about 65% its pre-indentation strength under compression.

Abstract: This study introduces the structural analysis and the testing results of the composite structure which is applied to tilting train in Korea. The composite structure is made of aluminum honeycomb structure materials like a sandwich. The static load test was performed to evaluate the structural characteristic and stability of the composite structure. Considering the vertical, compressive, torsional load and 3-point supporting type as a testing terms, the structural stability of a carbody was evaluated. Load test are based on "Performance Test Standard for Electrical Multiple Unit" with the reference code JIS E 7105. The test results have been very safety and stable for design load conditions.
