Abstract: Bamboo scrimber is a promising engineered bamboo material in the construction sector due to its favourable mechanical and aesthetic properties. Although considerable research on mechanical properties has been conducted, there is a gap in the knowledge of slenderness limits for short columns of bamboo scrimber. Slenderness limits suggested in four testing and structural design standards that are commonly used for engineered bamboo have been critically analysed and compared to identify their relative shortcomings. From these standards, Eurocode 5 proposes a better limit while the others behave conservatively. Owing to the lack of a design standard for engineered bamboo, researchers abide by standards compiled for timber/engineered timber to predict the compressive response of intermediate and long columns. In addition to showing the limitations of these studies, a rational column equation has been derived with a modified Euler load that yields reasonable accuracy with respect to two experimental studies.

Abstract: This paper presents a study on the different applying methods of (NH4)2HPO4 fire retardant influence on physical and mechanical properties of bamboo scrimber. The results showed: the properties of bamboo scrimber would change with applying methods changing of fire retardant; the method of applying fire retardants before gluing would increase the part of physical and mechanical properties of bamboo scrimber, but it would increase the manufacturing cost of bamboo scrimber; the method of applying fire retardants after gluing would reduce the part of physical and mechanical properties of bamboo scrimber.

Abstract: This research evaluated the planing performance of bamboo scrimber boards at three feed speeds and three cutting depths and used two methods to assess the finished surfaces. A macroscopic grade assessment was made according to ASTM D 1666-87 for visible planing defects. The other assessment was a microscopic scale roughness test measuring surface average roughness in terms of GB/T 12472. The visible results showed that the finished surface quality of bamboo resulted mainly in Grades and , with the main defect being torn grain. The two evaluations method showed consistent results in surface quality that the highest percentage of Grade was counted and the lowest roughness value occurred. Compared with the hardwood Sawtooth oak widely used in furniture industry in China, planning quality of bamboo scrimber board is better in terms of roughness.
