Abstract: During the drilling process of CFRP laminate with brazed diamond core drill, drilling temperature is very important to the drilling CFRP with brazed diamond core drill, which will influence the tolerance, defects of CFRP. In drilling experiments of CFRP laminate, the temperatures under different cutting parameters were measured by an infrared camera, and the effects of drilling parameters on drilling temperature were analyzed and the influence of grits distribution on temperatures were also studied. The results shown the drilling temperatures rise while increasing density of grits, grinding speed, and decreasing feeding speed.

Abstract: This article focuses on the drilling of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) laminate with brazed diamond core drill under no cooling condition. The effect of grit size, wall thickness of core drill and feed speed on machining quality at the hole exit is studied. The experimental results indicate that the grit size has a significant influence on the diameter of the hole exit. The expanding factor of diameter at hole exit increases with the decrease of grit size. Both large wall thickness and high feed speed lead to serious drilling-induced defects of the hole exit. The drilling-induced defects at hole exit are transformed from broken-edge and burr to local tear.

Abstract: Despite the facts that carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) components are mostly produced near net shape, machining, especially drilling is often required in order to bring the component into dimensional requirements and prepare it for assembly. Rapid drill wear and serious machining defects are the key problems in CFRP drilling, and employing proper drill is an effective way to solve these problems. In this paper, tests of the brazed diamond core drill are presented and the related issues, such as the thrust force, the drilling quality and the drill wear are studied.
