Abstract: Charge density wave (CDW) ordering in NbSe3 and the structurally related quasi one-dimensional compounds is reconsidered. Since the modulated ground state is characterized by unstable nano-domains, the structural information obtained from diffraction experiments is to be supplemented by some additional information from a method, able to reveal details on a unit cell level. Low-temperature (LT) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can resolve both, the local atomic structure and the superimposed charge density modulation. It is shown that the established model for NbSe3 with two incommensurate (IC) modes, q1 = (0,0.241,0) and q2 = (0.5,0.260,0.5), locked in at T1=144K and T2=59K and separately confined to two of the three available types of bi-capped trigonal prismatic (BCTP) columns, must be modified. The alternative explanation is based on the existence of modulated layered nano-domains and is in good accord with the available LT STM results. These confirm i.a. the presence of both IC modes above the lower CDW transition temperature. Two BCTP columns, belonging to a symmetry-related pair, are as a rule alternatively modulated by the two modes. Such pairs of columns are ordered into unstable layered nano-domains, whose q1 and q2 sub-layers are easily interchanged. The mutually interchangeable sections of the two unstable IC modes keep a temperature dependent long-range ordering. Both modes can formally be replaced by a single highly inharmonic long-period commensurate CDW.

Abstract: Physical properties of oxides RMn2O5 (R-rare earth ion) have intensively been studied for the last 15 years. Lately, an increased attention has been drawn to such systems in connection with the discovery in them of a strong relation between long magnetic order and electrical polarization.

Abstract: We consider the magnetic phase diagram of the two-dimensional Hubbard model ona square lattice. We take into account both spiral and collinear incommensurate magnetic states. The possibility of phase separation of spiral magnetic phases is taken into consideration as well. Our study shows that all the listed phases appear to be the ground state at certain parametersof the model. Relation of the obtained results to real materials, e.g. Cu-based high-temperaturesuperconductors, is discussed.

Abstract: In order to elucidate the origin of the interplay between charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in 1T-TaS2, we have synthesized powder samples of pure and C-intercalated 1T-CxTaS2 by means of a multi-anvil high-pressure synthesis method. We have found that single-phase samples are obtained in the 2-6 GPa range at 400 °C and for x=0-0.3. The structural, magnetic and transport properties of all samples have been investigated by means of neutron and x-ray diffraction, dc magnetization and dc electrical resistivity. For all x values including x=0, the data show that the CDW phase is suppressed concomitant to an abrupt onset of superconductivity, with Tc=3.2 K for x=0. The Tc value turns out to be weakly dependent on x, with a maximum Tc=3.8 K for x=0.2. This onset is accompanied by a crossover of magnetic behavior from paramagnetic Pauli-like to paramagnetic Curie-Weiss-like with effective moment 1.2 B/Ta, which suggests that a ionic picture is suitable for the superconducting phase, but not for the CDW phase. The analysis of the dependence of the a and c lattice parameters upon x as well as upon the synthesis conditions shows that the onset of superconductivity is mainly ascribed to unusual changes of the unit cell induced by the high-pressure synthesis. Specifically, the ex-situ lattice parameters exhibit a significantly larger c-axis parameter and a shrinking of the a-axis parameter stabilized by the high-pressure synthesis route. We argue that the above suppression of the CDW phase is induced by a broadening of the relevant 5d(t2g) band which stabilizes the metallic and superconducting phases. This scenario suggests that the strength of the electronic correlations are the main control parameter of the CDW-superconductivity competition in 1T-TaS2.

Abstract: The anisotropic magnetic properties of the metallic layered compound with hexagonal crystal structure 2H-NbSe2 are investigated as a function of their dependence on high-energy electron irradiation. Pauli paramagnetism of free electrons is shown to dominate the magnetic susceptibility, P. The anisotropy is related to spin-orbit effects on the hybridized electronic states. Irradiation affects the density of states at the Fermi surface, increasing both P and the anisotropy. Below a threshold temperature, TS=54 K, the paramagnetic contribution, which increases with the dose, is ascribed to dangling bonds, nanotubes and nanorods generated by irradiation.
