Abstract: The article proposes a new approach to improving the methodology for calculating the bearing capacity of the eccentrically compressed reinforced concrete elements for cases of their loading with large eccentricities. The basis of this technique is considered as a modified version of the deformation model for the reinforced concrete resistance force. The main feature of this model is the energy approach to transforming the reference diagrams of compression and concrete tension into the diagrams of non-uniform deformation, corresponding to the stress-strain state of the compressed and stretched zones of concrete in the cross section of the eccentrically compressed reinforced concrete structures. This way there is no falling branch in the concrete diagrams obtained by this method. A calculation diagram of the steel reinforcement deformation with a physical yield point was taken as a partial function, consisting of one linear and two non-linear equations. The proposed method also shows the possibility of taking into account the greatest curvature of an eccentrically compressed reinforced concrete element in the plane of its loading. The article presents all the necessary dependencies allowing the theoretical value of the carrying capacity of an eccentrically compressed reinforced concrete element determination. The results of the numerical studies performed using the design software developed by the authors for the personal computer are given.

Abstract: High speed camera system is used to record crack propagation on rock surface during the lab rocburst experiment. This paper presents the specific analytical method of crack propagation with high speed images. Crack propagation types and directions are briefly described, and the lengths, growth rate and fractal dimension of cracks are calculated. The results show that the crack grows mainly along the horizontal line on the unloading surface, at a low speed before rockburst and reaches a very high speed abruptly near the burst point. The fractal dimensions demonstrated that the crack turns to be rough when rockburst happens. The study on the crack propagation is benefit to the understanding on the mechanism of rockburst.

Abstract: In this paper, a coupled thermal-mechanical-damage model, Material Failure Process Analysis for Thermo code (abbreviated as MFPA-thermo), was applied to investigate the formation, extension and coalescence of cracks in FRCs, caused by the thermal mismatch of the matrix and the particles under uniform temperature variations. The effects of the thermal mismatch between the matrix and fibers on the stress distribution and crack development were also numerically studied. The influences of the material heterogeneity, the failure patterns of FRCs at varied temperatures are simulated and compared with the experimental results in the present paper. The results show that the mechanisms of thermal damage and fracture of the composite remarkedably depend on the difference between the coefficients of thermal expansion of the fibers and the matrix on a meso-scale. Meanwhile, the simulations indicate that the thermal cracking of the FRCs at uniform varied temperatures is an evolution process from diffused damage, nucleation, and finally linkage of cracks.
