Abstract: The Simple Cyclic extrusion compression (SCEC) has been developed for producing Al-1%Cu alloys with fine microstructures and superior properties. SCEC method was applied for only two-passess.It was found that the grain structure was significantly reduced from 1500 μm to 100 μm after two passes of cyclic extrusion. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of as-cast alloy were 110 MPa and 12 %, respectively. However, the corresponding mechanical properties of the two pass CEC deformed alloy are 275 MPa and 35%, respectively. These findings ensure that a significant improvement in the grain structure has been achieved. In addition, cyclic extrusion deformation increased the surface hardness of the alloy by 50 % after two passes.

Abstract: The Cyclic Extrusion – Compression - reciprocating extrusion process (CEC) is one of severe plastic deformation methods (SPD), which allow to produce bulk nanomaterials without changing the initial shape of deformed samples. The results are presented showing that the average grains size and microbands thickness in aluminium alloys decrease below 100 nm. The investigations revealed that the average grains size is about 250 nm and 200 nm in polycrystalline and monocrystalline copper, respectively. The Cyclic Extrusion Compression method is also used to produce bulk materials by powder consolidation. The subgrains/nanograins inside the silver powder particles after the consolidation processes achieved the mean size of about 100 nm. Moreover, it has been found that inside structure observed by TEM, the consolidated powder granules consisted from nanometric twins of about 10 – 20 nm. This silver based powder consolidated by CEC method were extruded by hydrostatic extrusion method. The final product were the wires with a diameter of 3 mm, which were used to electrical contacts production.

Abstract: Magnesium alloys are promising candidate materials for cardiovascular stents due to their good biocompatibility and degradation property in human body. However, in vivo tests also show that improvement in mechanical property and corrosion resistance is necessary for wide application. In this study, hot extrusion and cyclic extrusion compression (CEC) were used on Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy, the effects of hot extrusion and CEC process on the microstructures, mechanical properties and corrosion properties of alloy were studied. The results showed that the microstructures of CEC treated Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy became finer and more homogenous, some nanoparticles which came from the cluster phase uniformly precipitated inside grains, alloy had good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The immersion test results in SBF solution at 37 for 24h showed that the alloy after CEC treatment is uniform corrosion.

Abstract: Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is used to convert traditional coarse grain metals and alloys into ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials. UFG materials possess a number of improved mechanical and physical properties which destine them for a wide commercial use. However, any attempt to use SPD technology commercially requires a better insight into the mechanics and practicality of SPD processes. This paper looks into historical development of SPD processes and focuses on such aspects of SPD as material flow, role of hydrostatic pressure, friction, geometry of tools, billet and feeding considerations, technical feasibility, etc. The discussion of these topics sets a background for decisions concerning further research and commercialisation of SPD.

Abstract: Sandglass extrusion is an ultrafine grain size method. Due to the repetitive and multiple extrusions, large strain will be accumulated and ultafine grain size can be obtained. There are some factors that can affect the experimental result of sandglass extrusion. Among these factors, free space in mould cavity is very important, which can affect the forming of the fold during the extrusion. In this paper, the effects of free space in mould cavity on sandglass extrusion have been discussed and theory analysis and experimental results have been reported.
