Abstract: This paper has the objective to evaluate the technical feasibility of incorporation of leather powder in mortars. First a physical characterization of aggregate was carried and then preceded to the dissolution of the leather powder in alkaline solution, in the proportion of 1:1:1 of waste, alkaline solution and water respectively, obtaining the processed waste. In the next step, it has been molded specimen using two reference recipes in terms of mass, 1:3 of cement and sand, and 1:1:6 of cement, hydrated lime and sand respectively, keeping constant the flow table consistency of 130 ±10 mm and 220±10 mm, for each respectively recipe. Two groups of mortars were produced: one without processed waste, one with 5% and one with 10% in ratio to the cement mass. Tests had been carried such as compressive strength to axial compression, tensile strength to diametrical compression, and adherence strength on surfaces. The resistance tests performed; also the analyses of the leachate and solubilized extracts confirmed the feasibility of incorporation of leather powder in mortars.

Abstract: We checker huge quantities of plastic with various forms and types. Major problems caused by these wastes in nature, inside the urban areas and countryside, impose a concern of increasing difficulties for reasons of hygiene and environment Cement concrete is a relatively inert and durable material, compact and waterproof, which can prevent contamination of the environment by living the harmful effects of plastic. In this context it was considered appropriate to include in concrete composition the elements of plastic waste (bag: LDPE) and (bottle: PVC) as a technique for recovery and reuse it’s in the cost. It is a simple and clean procedure to remove these dangerous elements and participate to preserve the nature. Results showed the possibility of using these types of plastic at ambient condition, as a substitution of aggregates, with a slight decrease in compressive strength on the percentage of substitution and an optimal increase in tensile resistance associated with a substantial gain in weight and a high removal rate, especially for PVC. These materials may be intended for the manufacture of components requiring less performance (small works, architectural concrete and decorative elements of the interior, filling, surface coverage and roof.).

Abstract: Increasing production of nanomaterials makes the study of nanoparticles fate in the environment of immediate interest. Nanomaterials are known to radically change their properties when released into the environment. In this work, the ability of nanoparticles to form stable dispersions in physiological solutions has been demonstrated. The dispersions were prepared by mixing nanopowders of zinc (13.58 m2/g), copper (24.66 m2/g), aluminum oxides (54.75 m2/g), and zirconium dioxide (8.10 m2/g) with phosphate buffered saline, an isotonic solution of glucose and artificial lysosomal fluid. With the help of laser diffraction method and transmission electron microscopy it was shown that unstable suspensions (with the dispersoid size of 6...49 μm) and aggregative-stable lyosols (with the particles size of 20...300 nm) were formed in dispersions of nanoparticles in physiological media.

Abstract: To develop potential of the cities in the field of energy efficiency improvements and use of renewables, there is a need for new and more ambitious goals in line with the actual situation. Growing concern of smart city development and urban resilience has become increasingly embedded in urban planning, national security and energy policy. One of the main city documents focused on actions and measures to be implemented in City is Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP), which is the key document in which the Covenant signatory outlines how it intends to reach its CO2 reduction target by 2020. Taking into account specifics of modern cities and future city development at Smart City level the existing SEAP should be enhanced. Nowadays it is necessary to bring existing standalone energy actions at cross sector level in order to ensure urban resilience. Currently there are 3414 cities across the Europe and eastern partners which already have developed SEAP. The paper draws attention to areas with high impact to smart city development. In terms of Smart Cities the most powerful actions are those which directly affect at least these three sectors - energy, ICT and transport. Paper provides some good practice examples from the city of Riga. The losses of the heat transmitted to consumers by JSC "Rigas Siltums" - main heat supplier of Riga have been decreased by 667 thous. MWh or 2.45 times in comparison to year 1996/1997. Following the completion of reconstruction of the boiler houses, construction of a biofuel fired water heating boiler, construction of the biofuel fired cogeneration plant, installation of flue gas condensers for biofuel fired boilers at the DHP the share of biofuel utilization within the fuel balance of the JSC „RĪGAS SILTUMS” will reach 20.4% in fiscal year 2013/2014. The total energy produced from renewable energy sources since 01.01.1996 until 8.04.2014 is 920463.107 MWh. The project “Heat meters automatic remote reading system” proved to be a successful and reliable solution for the control and accounting of consumed heat, as well as related tasks enabling “online communication” with 8000 individual heating units throughout the Riga city. Development and introduction of electric cars and filling station infrastructure in Riga was one more step on the way to the SMART CITY status. Despite a fairly long payback period electric cars are quite beneficial solution for some companies whose activities are related with vehicles’ high mileage within the city as LLC “Rigas Satiksme

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to monitor the amount of discharged radioactive liquid discharges from nuclear power plant and propose ways to reduce the amount given. The report consists of a literature review, objective and methodology proposed. The methodology and results consist of distribution of waste, originally liquid radioactive waste (LRW), a source of LRW, a year-round monitoring of liquid effluents of nuclear power plant and eventual adoption of protective measures. Tritium, as one of the LRW, is a radioactive substance having a negative impact on the environment. In the course of our research, we have found an increased dose of tritium over permitted annual limit. We investigated the impact of tritium on the environment and took protective measures to reduce the amount of tritium released in the environment. The report may serve as a basis for other nuclear power plants and the entire nuclear industry.
