Abstract: This paper presents the possible deviations between “realistic” (performance-based) calculations of fire resistance of steel structures and corresponding calculations made by one of the often used simplified (prescriptive) procedures of EN 1993-1-2 i.e. the method of critical temperature (MCT). The comparison is done for a case of an assembly consisting of a steel beam and a steel girder connected to each other by a bolted fin-plate connection. For such structure the MCT method suggests that the structural fire resistance is 50 minutes. However, the realistic fire resistance calculated by an advanced performance-based procedure is evaluated to 44 minutes. Although the discrepancy between the results of both methods is not significant in the presented case, this finding implies that MCT can be on the unsafe side for some cases. More future debates and clarifications are therefore encouraged regarding the actual limits of the applicability of the simplified procedures.

Abstract: This paper presents the fatigue checking methodology of the steel bridge members according to Romanian norm SR 1911-98 and EN 1993-1-9. A comparative analysis regarding the fatigue checking of the main girders of a 30 m span steel railway bridge is made. The concluding remarks and observations are useful in the design activity of this type of structures.

Abstract: This paper presents an analysis regarding the bending resistance of a slender plate girder having a longitudinal stiffener in the compression zone of the web.The influence of the longitudinal stiffener rigidity on the bending resistance of a slender girder of Class 4 section is analyzed, starting from the hypothesis that the transversal stiffeners are infinitely rigid.

Abstract: Fire resistance of structural elements such as columns and beams has been evaluated by the fire test. However, needs of fire design based on analysis using a heat transfer theory and a stress analysis are increasing because the design can reduce not only the period of the fire test but the cost of it. The reliability of the analysis would be totally dependent on the mechanical, thermal databases of their structural steels. This paper evaluates the fire resistance of ordinary grade structural steels manufactured from Korea by examining the mechanical and thermal properties of SS 400, SM 400, and SM 490 at high temperature and comparing them with those defined in Eurocode 3. The results showed that the ordinary structural steel had almost the same characteristics as those in Eurocode 3.

Abstract: As the strength of structural steels is increasing, the performance of fire resistance should be evaluated clearly and suggested. While their application has been expanded, the evaluation of the fire resistance is inclined to adopt that derived from ordinary strength steels. In order to compare the fire resistance performance of high strength structural steels at high temperature, databases such as mechanical and thermal properties at elevated temperature were compared with those of Eurocode 3. After comparison, it is recommended that the passive protective material is more needed than those for the ordinary strength structural steels to meet the fire resistance requirement.
