Abstract: In this study, the possibility of producing of flat aluminum strips with tailored mechanical properties across their width by means of rolling was examined. The aim of the work was an experimental analysis of the effect of cold rolling of the strips with a pre-profiled cross-section in flat rolls. Because of different work hardening of the various elements of the pre-profiled strips a characteristic profile of mechanical properties over the strips cross-section was created. The performed tensile tests and hardness measurements proved the possibility of setting of tailored properties in flat strips by means of rolling. The difference between the mechanical characteristics of various strip’s elements for the selected aluminum alloy can reach 40%.

Abstract: Newton-Raphson (N-R) method has been employed to solve the system of simultaneous equations arising in Rigid-Plastic finite element simulation. The combination of the improved rotative mid-point mensuration and the N-R method, named the M-P method is designated to solve the equations of velocity increment in Rigid-Plastic FEM. The CPU times required for calculation by the M-P method and the N-R method are compared and it is found that the CPU time required for calculation of the N-R method is more than the M-P method. The calculated rolling forces by the M-P method and the N-R method are compared and it is found that the former correlates better with the measured value. Numerical tests and application show that the M-P method is feasible and steady.

Abstract: The three dimensional deformation of strip during flat rolling is always a key issue, the lateral flow of metal on the strip edge will determines the quality of final product. In this paper, a theoretical analysis focus on the lateral flow of strip edge is discussed. Lateral Flow Factor and Relative Lateral Flow Factor are developed originally to analyze the lateral flow of strip and edge drop. For special process condition mentioned in paper, value of lateral flow factor is about 0.07.
