Abstract: The development of portable instrumentation for heavy metals analysis was increased rapidly. However, the quality of data from portable methods has so far been questioned when compared to conventional instrumentation. In this research, a comparative study of conventional and portable instrumentations for Cr(VI) analysis on liquid waste water of Chemistry Laboratory at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) was conducted. This research started with validation and statistical evaluation of instrumentation methods which are UV-Visible spectrophotometer, portable spectrophotometer (PiCOEXPLORER) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES). The validation methods consist of determination of linearity, sensitivity, limit of detection and limit of quantification. The results showed that the validation methods of ICP-AES were better than PiCOEXPLORER and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Based on t-test, it was obtained that the result of Cr(VI) analyses with the comparison of UV-Vis and PiCOEXPLORER, ICP-AES and PiCOEXPLORER, and UV-Vis and ICP-AES; there were no significant difference (tcount< ttable). The ANOVA test (F test) results showed that the Fcount value is less than Ftable so that the results of Cr(VI) analysis in the standard solution and liquid waste samples measured by three instrumentations. Thus, it was concluded that portable instrumentations was good and gives the same quality as conventional instrumentations (UV-Vis and ICP AES).

Abstract: Generally, the content of sulfide and sulfate (expressed as a sulphur trioxide) in pebble and crushed stone for construction is low. So use the weight method specified in the national standard method for determination, is not only tedious and time consuming, but also not accurate enough. In this paper, with reference to the pretreatment method of the relevant national standard, rapid and accurate test results can usually be obtained for the determination of sulfur trioxide in and crushed stone for construction by using ICP-AES as a new method, greatly reducing the time of the experiment and improve the efficiency. According to the analysis of spectrum interference, 182.0 nm was selected as the best analysis of spectral line for sulfur. The detection line of this method (3S) was 0.016 mg/L, the recovery rate of the sample was between 93.3%-104.0%, and the relative standard deviation (n=6) of the parallel samples was less than 1.05%.

Abstract: In this work, with reference to the pretreatment method of the relevant national standard, we tested the content of SO3 in slag powder before and after burning by ICP-AES, then the result of burning loss was corrected by the content of SO3. The content of SO3 which was determined by this new method is fast and accurate, compared with the traditional method. We selected the wavelength of 182.0nm as spectral analysis of SO3. The detection limit of the method (3S) was 0.016 mg/L, the recovery rate of the sample was between 97%-104%, and the relative standard deviation (n=6) of the parallel samples was less than 1.05%.

Abstract: Bi3Ni2Ta3O14 pyrochlores and related materials were prepared by solid state reaction at sintering temperatures ranging from 900°C to 1150°C. The BNT cubic pyrochlores could be represented by a general formula Bi3Ni2-xTa3O14-x and phase pure sample was obtained at temperature 1050°C with x = 0.6. This was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and detailed lattice refinement. The single phase material crystallized in a cubic system, space group Fd3m with a = b = c = 10.5134 Å, α = β = γ = 90o, respectively. The sample was further characterized using a combination of techniques including Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and inductively coupled plasma – atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The material was thermally stable without any thermal events being observed. Electrical properties of the single phase material were studied by ac impedance spectroscopy starting from room temperature to 800 oC over a frequency range of 5 Hz to 13 MHz. The phase formation and solid solutions of cubic pyrochlores in the Bi2O3-NiO-Ta2O5 (BNT) ternary system were studied thoroughly via combination of characterization techniques.

Abstract: A novel method for the determination of rhodium in waste rhodium-loaded carbon catalyst samples was established by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry after samples digested by Teflon pressure digestion vessel with aqua regia. Such experiment conditions were investigated as the influence of sample dissolution methods, digestion time, digestion temperature and interfering ions on the determination. The results indicated that the digestion effect was optimum with samples digested 8 hour at 180 °C. Al, Fe, Mg, Ca and Si in samples had no effect on the determination of rhodium. Experiment indicated rhodium concentration within the range of 0 ~ 150 mg L-1 had a linear relation with emission intensity. The recovery was 99.20% ~ 100.73 %, and the relative standard deviation was 1.8 %. A satisfactory result was obtained when applying the proposed method in the practical sample.
