Abstract: Effect of ceramic coating (TiN, TiCN, TiAlN or Al2O3) on the wear resistance and thermal oxidation behavior of Inconel 617 alloy (Ni-22Cr-12.5Co-9Mo-1Al) have been examined. TiAlN and Al2O3 coatings showed lower wear loss than bare Inconel 617 and the enhanced thermal oxidation resistance at 1000oC by suppressing the inhomogeneous formation of Cr2O3 at the surface region through the reaction between oxygen and grain boundary-diffused Cr, one of the main component of Inconel 617 alloy, while TiN and TiCN coatings showed poor temperature stability at the temperature region above 600 oC.

Abstract: Cyclic strain control tests have been performed on cylindrical specimens of cast polycrystalline Inconel 792-5A superalloy at 23, 500, 700 and 800 °C in laboratory atmosphere to study the effect of temperature on the fatigue behavior. Cyclic hardening-softening curves and fatigue life curves were measured. Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the surface relief. Low amplitude straining was characterized by saturation of the stress amplitude. In room temperature high amplitude straining cyclic hardening was followed by marked saturation. Pronounced continuous hardening until failure was observed at 500 °C. Initial cyclic hardening was followed by softening at 800 °C. A systematic shift of the Manson-Coffin and of the Basquin curves to lower fatigue lives was found when temperature was increased. Fatigue cracks were observed to initiate from surface slip markings at all temperatures.

Abstract: Studies on the strength and fatigue life of machines and structures have been conducted in accordance with the development of modern industries. In particular, fine and repetitive cyclic damage occurring in contact regions has been known to have an impact on fretting fatigue fractures. INCONEL alloy 600, 690 and INCOLOY alloy 800 are iron-nickel-chromium alloy having excellent resistance to many corrosive aqueous media and high-temperature atmospheres. These alloy are used extensively in the nuclear power plants industry, the chemical industry, the heat-treating industry and the electronic industry. In this paper, the effect of fretting damage on fatigue behavior for INCONEL alloy 600, 690 and INCOLOY alloy 800 were studied. Also, various kinds of mechanical tests such as tension and plain fatigue tests are performed. The objective of this study is to guarantee reliability of the facility applied in a power plant by comparing three materials in respect to fretting fatigue.
