Abstract: Company SAG (Salzburger Aluminium AG) is a supplier of fuel tanks, LNG and hydraulic tanks, air reservoirs and structural applications for the commercial vehicle and automotive industry. The company’s expertise is welding but SAG also has a 25 years history in Semi-Solid casting starting in 1993 when the first Thixocasting cell was installed in Lend/Austria. Since then SAG is participating on the diverse casting market and competes with other processes looking for applications for which Semi-Solid processing has a unique selling proposition. This contribution gives examples of industrialized components and will outline their significant characteristics and advantages in comparison to conventional casting processes. Furthermore the development of Semi-Solid cast components, the production process chain as well as commercial aspects will be outlined. The bottom line is that usually it is not a single advantage of Semi-Solid casting that will make a product attractive for the customer but a combination of several of them. Moreover it is not just the casting process itself but the efficiency of the whole production process chain that will result in a commercially successful product.

Abstract: The paper presents a possible practical application based on two 6R overconstrained mechanism, more precisely 6R Wohlhart overconstrained mechanism. Two of these mechanisms are put in a mirror position, in order to obtain a car jack. The mechanisms are disposed in other position than the original one, three non-adjacent joints being constrained to remain in a fixed plane.

Abstract: A biosorbent was prepared by treating the persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) fallen leaves with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The NaOH concentration and stirring period for the preparation of the biosorbent were adjusted to optimise the Cd(I) adsorption capacity of the biosorbents. Removal of highly toxic Cadmium metal ions from water system using the optimal biosorbent named ‘NPFL’ was investigated using a mimic industrial column. The result showed that NPFL could remove Cd(II) in large quantities from aqueous solution with coexisting metal ions. The raw material, NPFL and Cd(II) loaded NPFL were characterized by SEM-EDS. The reusability of NPFL was also studied by batch adsorption-desorption test.

Abstract: D-Tagatose is a ketohexose monosaccharide and recognized as a low-calorie substitute sweetener that could be used in nonchronic drugs, foods, beverages and dietary supplements. Currently, the biological production of D-tagatose using L-arabinose isomerase has caused extensive attention. In the article, properties and recent researches about D-tagatose and L-arabinose isomerase are described. The industrial application and existing problems are also stated.

Abstract: The Pb–Ag–Ca alloy anode with surface passivation was applied in industrial production of zinc electrowinning. The application situation was investigated by detection and tracking more than 3 months. The results were analyzed by comparison with the data acquired from the production using the reference anodes without surface treatment. The results showed that using the anode with surface passivation can increase zinc yield, reduce Pb content in zinc product, prolong the anode life by improving the corrosion resistance, and then reduce the production costs.

Abstract: Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) is an emerging process. As a sheet metal forming process, it allows manufacturing components without the development of complex tools in comparison with stamping process. Although existing technical research achievements are plenty, it remains to be improved to make an industrially suitable process. This work is dedicated to the incremental forming of the throttle pedal fixed plate to analyze and figure out the reasonable practical procedure of ISF process, and helpful to promote the industrial applications of ISF.

Abstract: A numerical model for a multiphysics problem is presented. It includes the movement of subdomains, which are embedded in a global air domain. The description of the movement is based on a discrete level set representation of the moving boundaries. It is based on the original geometry of the moving tools, such that the mesh quality is not reduced in subsequent time steps.

Abstract: Integrated model based control systems are an essential part of modern plant operations. The production requirements have evolved from achieving geometric tolerances to becoming a large, flexible, but accurate metallurgical instrument. Within the steel industry, on-line process and microstructure monitoring systems have been realised for many years on hot strip mills. At recent conferences (including ReX&GG IV), Siemens has described the successful implementation of these models in steel plate production; in applications where there is increased complexity in through thickness microstructure and the final products have safety critical applications. Even with advanced on-line systems and tailored production routes there is a relatively comfortable process window in modern steel manufacture. For the plant builder, light structural metals titanium and magnesium, and harder nickel based high temperature alloys represent another level of complexity and process control requirements. This paper examines the potential of microstructure modelling with respect to the process design for manufacturing wrought products in alternative alloy systems. Metallurgical aspects will be considered and their practical implications discussed. The continued expansion of these materials into markets where high strength/weight ratios, corrosion resistance or high temperature properties are desirable (e.g. automotive, offshore, chemical, aerospace) make this worthwhile from an industrial perspective.

Abstract: Clay blends are products used in several industrial sectors, such as petrochemical or pharmaceutical. In this work we describe a natural clay blend occurring in northeastern Brazil. The aim was to purify and investigate their rheological and physical-chemical properties. Foster essays with water and organic solvents were utilized to access the swelling properties of the analyzed sample. Powder X-ray diffractograms (PXRD) were utilized to analyze qualitatively the clay minerals presents in the sample blend. Scanning eletronic microscopy (SEM) and Malvern techniques were used to investigate the sample clay morphology. The purification proceeding allowed separate distinct clay phases with different colors. PXRD analysis demonstrated that each clay phase presents similar structure. SEM and Malvern analysis showed distinct morphology and different size distribution for each clay phase. Our results revealed that the analyzed sample clay may be classified as smectite blend with strong potential for use in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

Abstract: An online slab quality diagnosis & analysis system named CISDI_SQDS ONLINE R2011 has been presented in this paper. The system is based on mechanism of defects, which mainly refer to surface crack & internal crack, heat-transfer & solidification simulation, stress & strain calculation and metallurgical process analysis about continuous casting. Combining with BP neural network, several kinds of quality loss factors are used to describe the possibility of inducement. Meanwhile, the respective crack formation indexes are introduced to be the theoretical reference data for slab quality level evaluation and guiding production. The CISDI_SQDS ONLINE R2011 system was firstly applied on the No.1 Slab Continuous Caster of Bayi Steel in China. It is preliminary proved that the model is reliable and reasonable. It can be widely used as an important theoretical tool for prediction & control for slab quality in continuous casting process.
