Abstract: In this study local texture of process vessels made of carbon steel cladded by protective layers of stainless steel by submerged arc welding (SAW) were investigated by neutron diffraction using the diffractometer STRESSSPEC at FRM 2 (Garching, Germany). Different samples were prepared: as welded and as welded plus relevant industrial heat treatment. Local texture measurements with a gauge volume of 3 x 3 x 2 mm3 of the three cladding layers (at depths of 2 mm, 5 mm and 7.5 mm) for each sample were determined. Texture results indicated that there exists an annealed cube component in all the studied samples. Based on the measured pole figures at each depth and sample, the calculated orientation distribution functions data were used to calculate the Young's modulus with respect to the main welding directions. The calculated local and bulk anisotropic Young’s modulus in depth is presented and discussed.

Abstract: An integrally stiffened panel (ISP) made from extruded 2099-T83 Al-Li alloy was subjected to fatigue loadings to investigate the influence of both the local texture and grain structure on fatigue crack propagation (FCP) behavior. The microstructure was mainly unrecrystallized. Grains were mostly layered in the web and fibrous in the other locations. Fiber texture components were present in the stiffener locations, and a rolling-type texture in the web. Resistance to FCP decreases as the local aspect ratio increases. Changes in FCP rates in the web, stiffener base and stiffener web were consistent with the microstructural features and texture. The stiffener cap with a strong fiber texture similar to that of the stiffener base exhibited a lower resistance to FCP, suggesting that the influence of the texture is convoluted in the stiffener cap by the markedly different grain structure. Therefore, FCP behavior in this alloy appears to be governed by both texture and grain structure.

Abstract: TEM, Kikuchi diffraction analyses, EBSD, neutron diffraction and hardness measurements have been applied in a study of commercial purity aluminum (AA1200) cold rolled to strains 2 and 4 and afterwards recovered by a heat treatment for 2h at temperatures up to 220 °C. The deformation microstructure is a lamellar structure delineated by dislocation boundaries and high angle boundaries ( ) parallel to the rolling plane. The macrotexture is a typical rolling texture which is composed of individual texture components present as micrometer- and submicrometre-sized volumes. In the lamellar structure, correlations have been established between microstructural parameters and the local texture, showing for example that the density of high angle boundaries and the stored energy vary locally. The local variations affect the annealing behaviors in a way that some regions coarsen faster than others, leading to a recovered structure which is heterogeneous.

Abstract: A rate-independent polycrystal model, allowing for the shape and spatial coordination of neighboring constitutive crystals and for the plastic strain distribution among them, has been used to simulate the local texture evolution in an Al polycrystal under compression. The simulation results compare favourably to relevant experimental data and show the reorientation path of each crystal to strongly depend on orientations of its immediate neighbors.

Abstract: In this paper, the ‘orange peel’ defect in the surface range of the st14 steel sheet has been investigated using the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. It has been found that the ‘orange peel’ defect in the st14 steel sheet was resulted from the local coarse grains which were produced during hot-rolling due to the critical deformation in dual-phase zone; During deep drawing, the coarse grains with {100}<001> microtexture can slip on the {112}<111> slip system to form bulging and yields orange peel defects, while the coarse grains with {112}<110> orientation do not form the defect as the Schmid factor of {112}<111> slip system in it equals zero.

Abstract: We find that a severely rolled FeCo alloy has anomalous enhancement of the rotated-cube {100}<011> texture component and a decrease of the {111} components after annealing, which is contrast to the recrystallization behaviors reported in traditional BCC metals and alloys. The local texture measurements show that two kinds of grains with obviously different orientations, i.e. {100} and {111}, are heterogeneously distributed in the deformed specimen and the migration of high-angle grain boundaries is observed after annealing in the disordering temperature region.

Abstract: In this work the textures of MgAl9Zn1, MgAl6Zn1, MgAl3Zn1 and MgAl2Mn alloys have been studied, using individual grain orientation measurement (“ACOM”) in the SEM. Hot extruded billets, unidirectional, reverse and cross-rolled sheet metals as well as laser welding seams have been investigated. In the shaft of a partial extrudate through a circular die orifice, a <0001> ring fiber texture has formed which continuously changes into a spiral fiber texture in the bottom neck. The unidirectional and the reverse hot rolled MgAl2Mn specimens show an R type <0001> texture with a small asymmetrical split whereby the basal poles are tilted by about ±12° from the sheet normal direction to the rolling direction. In the hot cross rolled specimens, the basal poles are slightly spread both in the first and second rolling directions. Texture in the laser welding seams is weak and distinctly different from that of the sheet material. There is almost no heat affected zone at the margins of the welding seams.
