Abstract: This article describes the practical application of hot extrusion for compaction of magnesium shavings in semi-finished products and the study of the influence of process parameters on the mechanical properties of the obtained MA5 (AZ80) magnesium alloy bars. Production of bars was carried out at different heating temperatures and plastic deformation degree to find technology provide the best combination of tensile and compressive properties. The resulting bars are somewhat higher in strength characteristics than the strength of deformed cast bars made from MA5 alloy, however, they are significantly lower in ductility.

Abstract: Tensile and compressive tests of a large AZ31 extrusion were performed along extrusion and long transverse directions over a range of strain rate (0.00075 s-1 to 9 s-1) and temperature (100°C to -143°C). The effects of strain rate, temperature, sample orientation and load direction (tension or compression) on mechanical properties are reported and discussed. The yield strength of tensile samples along the extrusion direction can be described by a constitutive equation using the conventional rate parameter for thermally activated deformation.

Abstract: An appropriate temperature (150-200°C) bending process has been developed for AZ31 and AM30 magnesium alloy tubes, and the optimum bending process parameters were obtained using a Design of Experiments (DOE) method. The development of this process was one of the key factors for use of magnesium tubes in automotive components for vehicle weight reduction. The tensile properties and deformation microstructure of magnesium alloys at elevated temperatures indicated that temperature of 150-200°C which might be suitable for hydroforming and other forming processes.
