Abstract: The fashion industry market is intrinsically dynamic and mutable. Emerging trends lead consumers and industry to a mindset transformation, through a deep shift in the paradigms of creation, production, and acquisition. The footwear industry recognizes the potential of this reality, focusing on the development of innovative strategies based on collaborative mass customization. In Portugal, despite footwear being a mature industry, it is necessary to continuously invest in innovation-based competitiveness. Thus, based on two surveys, one addressed to a group of seven Portuguese manufacturers (with no mass customization experience), and the other to a group of three Portuguese experts (specialized in footwear customization), critical information about expectations versus reality was gathered. The main objective was to obtain specific and exhaustive data, based on qualitative elements. In this way, it is aimed to contribute to the theoretical reflection of the collaborative design applied to the customization of footwear based on the overview of the Portuguese industry.

Abstract: In current production and business environment many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) apply strategy of mass customization (MC). They do so in order to draw the attention of potential customers, by offering a high level of product customization. The product differentiation in context of mass-customized production (MCP) brings massive changes into facility operations, fundamentally influences the character and substance of assembly processes which causes significant changes in assembly complexity. This paper firstly presents a methodological framework for generation of product configurations depending on the composition and number of initial assembly components, subsequently, a procedure for assessment of configuration complexity is proposed. The presented methodological framework is further applied on a specific model of customized assembly of washing machines where the configuration complexity is further compared with generally applicable Shannon`s (entropic) structural complexity.

Abstract: Mass customization (MC) is an advanced production mode in the 21st century that combines two opposite production patterns -- customization production and mass production. It keeps low production cost and fast delivery time, while meeting individual customers needs. Firstly, via analyzing the typical production management patterns (material requirement planning (MRP)/ just in time (JIT)), and based on the two strategies of modularization and postponement, the paper presented a push/pull manufacturing model to meet the demands of MC. This model integrates the two different production patterns (push and pull) to reduce inventory, production costs and production time. Before the customer order decoupling point (CODP), common components and selective components are produced via push of plan in presence of inventory. After the CODP, customization production is conducted by pull of orders.
