Abstract: In the airplane design, thousand holes should be manufactured by machining leading this process in the first place for process optimization. Recently, the stack materials used in this application are sheet layers of Titanium alloy, Aluminum alloy and CFRP, which normally are machined under different cutting conditions. There are two main solutions when drilling stacks: using the more conservative ones or changing the parameters for each layer. In orbital drilling the forces are lower, with better quality but with longer machining time, compared to drilling, allowing the measurement and control of the process. Smart machining techniques can be applied for recognising and adapting the cutting parameters in real time, depending on a database for decision-making. In this paper, a technique is proposed to identify the cutting material based on the cutting and feed components of the machining force in a circular milling process. Experiments consist of machining separately Titanium and Aluminium alloy workpieces in a similar range of cutting speed and feed, measuring forces and the position of the cutting tool (X,Y, SP) using the machine-tool data. The results show that it is possible to identify the materials using the calculated tangential and radial force components in the tool referential frame because the values of specific cutting and feed force are significantly different for each material. An specific force map is used as a signature to distinguish the materials in real time machining which can be used for orbital drilling in the next step of the research.

Abstract: Recycling is one of the important approaches to manage the waste effectively. Nowadays, many recycle bins were placed in school, university, shopping complex and housing area. Although most of them have good awareness to support these activities, yet there are still who abuse the usage of recycling bin by inserting prohibited items. To cater such an issue, a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) with material identification module is proposed to accept only empty recycle items and reject the rest. The constructed system consists of rotating mechanism and collection of sensors to detect empty PET bottle and aluminum can respectively. From the experiment, it can be shown that the module capable to reject unwanted material with an average of 82.5% of accuracy. Such capability shows a promising outcome for preventing the abuse of recycling bins, and can be used to realize the RVM concept by introducing a reward to the person who recycle properly.

Abstract: Composite materials are created as a quite complex architecture which includes a fibre reinforcement structure and matrix material. Many material parameters play a role when composite structures are modelled, e.g. in finite element models. In addition to the properties of the raw fibre and matrix materials which are used, also geometrical parameters have a significant effect on structural characteristics. Fibre reinforcement geometry together with material properties of fibre and matrix determine homogenised material properties. The first part of the paper gives an overview of the most important processes which are used in composites processing industry. The factors which affect variability are also listed, and the effect of variability on material parameters is mentioned as well. The second part of the paper elaborates the identification of geometrical variability of the fibre reinforcement structure which is encountered with one particular type of composite material, namely a twill 2/2 carbon fibre weave with an epoxy matrix.

Abstract: Based on micro-image, the material identification of iron and copper debris in working oil of engineering equipment is researched. By selecting four characteristic parameters of debris image, a debris recognition classifier is designed based on multi-SVM. The materials and types of debris can be fast identified after the model is trained and the identification accuracy is high, thus a new method for fault diagnosis of engineering equipment is provided.
