Abstract: Dynamic analysis is very important in developing machine structure to sustain the required accuracy, reliability and productivity. The objective of this study is to conduct a dynamic and modal analyses of micro-milling machine. The machine designs were predicted by comparing the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using ANSYS software and experimental hammer testing. Two micro-milling machine designs have been proposed. Natural frequency and mode shape was analyzed in modal analysis which show the result that first mode recorded frequency of 92.086 Hz for design A and 154.78 Hz for design B. Natural frequency of design B was higher than design A. From the comparision, it can be concluded that Design B was selected as a best design.

Abstract: This paper presents the development and performance assessment of a novel 5-axis ultra-precision micro-milling machine (UltraMill) which enables ultra-precision micromachining of high precision 3D miniature components and micro features. An integrated design approach with motion accuracy, dynamic stiffness and thermal stability prioritized has been proposed and applied to analyze and optimize key machine components and their integration. Direct drives and aerostatic bearings with the squeeze oil-film damper are employed in the micro-milling machine throughout, which offers higher motion accuracy, improved dynamics and loading capacity. Micro-milling trials were performed on OFHC copper using tungsten carbide, CVD diamond and single crystal diamond micro tools. Both micro featured profiles and micro machined surfaces were measured to validate the proposed machine specifications and performance.

Abstract: In this paper, methods of micro-fabrication carried out by micro milling machine are proposed. Structure design and simulation analysis of micro milling machine are accomplished. A 3D parametric modeling software CATIA is used to complete the structure design and modeling of micro milling machine and a simulation software ANSYS is used to do the whole analysis of micro milling machine. The static and dynamic simulation analysis of motorized spindle which is the key part of micro milling machine is also completed. Through simulation and analysis to seek the rationality of the design of micro milling machine. It has important significance for the improvement and development of machine tool in the next step.

Abstract: The realization of the handwheel function is a key problem for development of numerical control system of micro milling machine. This paper introduced the interface specifications and hardware connecting methods of handwheel NK100AB2, developed control program based on PMAC (Programmable Multi-Axis Controller) and industrial personal computer, finally achieved the function of axes selecting and the feed rate selecting. Based on the traditional edge detector tool setting method, an improved tool setting method is proposed. The inverted micro milling cutter hilt is used to replace the traditional edge detector, which avoids the opposite reamer error caused by the irregular cutter blade shape, finally, tool setting function is achieved through the collecting of electrical signal. The research will provide a useful reference for the realization of handwheel and tool setting of micro milling machine based on PMAC.

Abstract: To create miniaturized components, a 3-axis micro-milling machine tool composed of linear motor stages, high-speed air-bearing spindle and motion control card DMC-1842 is developed in this paper. The CNC system of the parallel double CPU based on industrial control computer and Windows operating system is constructed. The application software of CNC system is exploited by modularized mind in C# programming language, reasonable human-computer interface is designed. Finally, in order to validate the performance of the micro-milling machine, the miniaturized parts are machined o by developed CNC system. Through these tests analysis, the hardware and software architecture of the CNC system is verified to meet the requirements of the micro-milling machine tool. Micro-milling process with developed micro-milling machine tool is proved to be feasible and applicable, and can fully satisfy the producing requires of miniaturized components.
