Abstract: The accuracy of tool setting has a great influence on the machining accuracy of micro structures. In this paper, electric breakdown in micro gap is used for tool setting and the accuracy of this method is ±0.2μm. Experimental studies have been done to prove the feasibility of this method. Experimental results show that the breakdown voltage is about 30V when the gap between the tool and the tool setting probe is 2μm, and tool diameter has little effect on this phenomenon. With the increase of the tool wear the breakdown voltage shows ascendant trend, so this method can be used to monitor tool wear.

Abstract: Micro cutting offers good potentialities in order to manufacture small and medium lot sizes of micro-parts with arbitrary geometry at an economically reasonable expense. This technology has been widely used in many fields, especially in aerospace field and biological medicine. The slit grating which is used for X-ray telescope is difficult to machine because of the small critical dimensions, large material removal rates and the high requirement of machining quality. In this paper, two methods are describes to manufacture the slit grating which include micro-milling and flying-cutting. The focus is on the design of micro tool, optimization of machining parameters, the comparison of machining efficiency and precision of slit grating by micro-milling and flying-cutting.

Abstract: The purpose of present study was to increase productivity and to reduce the polution of dust for making of endmill by conventional method such as grinding process. The micro scale endmill manufactured by powder injection molding, the molding (green part) was debinded and sintered. After that decreasing the porosities of the parts sintered, HIP process was adapted. After HIP process the relative density was shown more than 99% of the tools sintered. Finally, the micro cutting experiment using manufactured tool by PIM and HIP were implemented for verifying the feasibility of the tool. The ware of zirconia micro tool was observed very small, but the concentricity is less than the conventional tool made by grinding process. This type of tool is adequate to use in rough milling.
