Abstract: Vacancies occupying different sub-lattices of D03 structure of Fe3Al alloy were investigated by the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The calculations basing on the super-cell approach have been performed for the vacancy concentrations of 1.6 and 3 at.%. For both concentrations the sub-lattice preference for vacancy location was determined. The dependence of vacancy formation energy on magnetic state of structure has been found. The positron lifetimes for the annihilation in the bulk (Fe3Al) and in vacancies have been investigated basing on the ab initio results for the electron density. The effect of vacancies on spin magnetic moment and hy-perfine parameters of Fe atoms neighboring the vacancy was examined. The results are discussed and compared with the data available.

Abstract: In this work positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is employed to study the ortho-Positronium lifetime parameters τ3>, σ3 and I3 in two structurally simple amorphous polymers 1,2-poly(butadiene) and cis-1,4-poly(isoprene). The ortho-Positronium mean lifetime parameter τ3> is compared with dynamics data from broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. Coincidences of characteristic temperatures from PALS with BDS and ESR experiments show close relationships between positron lifetime and dynamics of polymers.

Abstract: Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is used to study the free-volume in β-cyclodextrin (CD) with the encapsulation of two different essential oils: garlic (Allium sativum) and marjoram (Origanum majorana). The data reveal the presence of a long lifetime component related to the o-Ps. It is observed that the addition of garlic (or marjoram) oil to β-CD results in a decrease of the o-Ps lifetime which was ascribed to a reduction of the free volume holes from 83.6 to 67.7 Å3 (79.1 to 72.6 Å3). Different mechanisms for the encapsulation of garlic and marjoram oils in β-CD are suggested by the PALS parameters.

Abstract: Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was used to study the free-volume parameters in various pure -, - and -cyclodextrins samples and, in the case of β-cyclodextrin, with inclusion of S-carvone and thymoquinone. The results clearly indicate the presence of long lifetime components related to Ps-formation. The data show that the addition of S-carvone to β-cyclodextrin results in a decrease of o-Ps lifetime that we ascribe to a reduction of free volume holes from 81.8 to 63.7 Å3. The long lifetime component disappears when thymoquinone is added to -cyclodextrin, indicating this substance acts as an o-Ps quencher. For all samples studied, a decrease in the long lifetime component values was observed with increasing source in situ time, a result that might be attributed to the irradiation of the sample by the 22Na positron source.

Abstract: The paper presents the results of investigations of the effect of impact pressure (in the range of both elastic and plastic deformations) on the parameters of the positron lifetime spectra in PE-UMHW polymer known under the trade mark Chirulen1120. The changes in the long-living component of the positron lifetime spectrum, connected with the annihilation of o-Ps in the pick-off process, are analyzed in dependence on the impact energy. The impact duration in the Charpy’s tests depending on the impact energy was measured, too. The dependencies of the radius of the volume of empty spaces in which the positronium annihilates, on the impact pressure were determined applying the Eldrup-Tao model.

Abstract: Positron lifetime annihilation spectroscopy (PALS) was used to study the temperature- dependence of sub-nanometer size local free volumes in two atactic poly(n-octadecyl methacrylate)s (PODMA) with different molecular weight. These materials exhibit short range layered structure with a self-assembly and crystallization of side chains. From the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) lifetime the size of free volume holes and its distribution are calculated. At a temperature Tm=311 ± 5 K, the mean hole volume shows an abrupt and strong increase from 0.15 nm3 to 0.2 nm3, which comes from the melting of side-chains. The reverse effect, attributed to side chain crystallization, was observed during cooling the samples at slightly lower temperatures. The lifetime result of PODMA is compared with semifluorinated polyesters in which the side chain has an oxydecylperfluorodecyl structure (-O-(CH2)10-(CF2)9-CF3). Long chain polymers without side-chains such as polyethylene and short side-chain poly(n-alkyl methacrylate)s: poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(n-hexyl methacrylate) (PHMA) are also compared with these polymers.

Abstract: Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been applied to study if the microstructure changes in Co80Zr10V10 and Co65Zr10V25 metallic glasses after heat treatment. Samples in as-quenched state were isothermally annealed at chosen temperatures in the temperature range 100°C - 580°C for 1 hour. In spite of differences of chemical composition and magnetic properties the obtained dependencies of positron lifetime on annealing temperature do not differ significantly for lower temperatures. The higher increase of positron lifetime for Co65Zr10V25 than that for Co80Zr10V10 indicates differences in crystallization in the two metallic glasses studied.

Abstract: Positron lifetime spectroscopy was conducted for natural minerals to investigate open-nano pores. Positronium (Ps) formation occurs with ortho-positronium (o-Ps) intensities ranging from a few % to 20 % and size distributions of nano pores are evaluated from o-Ps lifetimes. The results will be discussed with respect to formation processes of nano pores influenced by earth's environment.

Abstract: Carbon black (CB) is essentially carbon in the form of extremely fine particle aggregates (100-200nm) having an amorphous molecular structure. Oil absorption or compressed dibutyl phthalate (CDBP) and iodine adsorption or nitrogen surface area (N2SA) are parameters commonly used to describe CB morphology or structure and the surface area of CB available for reaction with rubber. We have used both positron lifetime and Doppler broadening spectroscopy to study these two parameters for a variety of rubber CB composite samples. The o-Ps pickoff lifetime depends only on the type of rubber and is independent of CDBP and N2SA. However, the o-Ps lifetime intensity, I3, and the S parameter decrease with both CDBP and N2SA.

Abstract: Superposed-neutral-atom model and the finite-difference method (SNA-FD) are used to calculate the positron lifetime of different sizes and types of vacancy clusters in Ni3Al alloy. The calculated positron bulk lifetime in Ni3Al agrees well with the experimental results mentioned in literatures. The positron lifetimes of vacancy clusters with the same amount of vacancy but different components are also calculated. The results show that the positron lifetime is different when its components are different. The positron lifetimes of vacancy clusters with a single element but different sizes are also calculated. The result shows that the positron lifetime is almost a constant when its component is only Al vacancy, but the positron lifetime will increase at first and trend to be a constant when its component is only Ni vacancy.
