Abstract: In order to make product maintainable, maintainability engineering encourages sufficient focus on product maintenance at early development stage, and systematic maintainability design throughout product development and design. Maintainability and other life cycle aspects should be concurrently design into product. Integrated maintainability information model is established. Based on product assembly information model, the components of integrated maintainability information model, and how to integrate this model with design process model are discussed respectively. With Pro/INTRALINK as product data management platform, an integrated environment which supports concurrent maintainability design and its establishment steps are explored, including configuring basic environment, establishing master information model, defining and managing design flow, which provide and effective methods for concurrent maintainability design.

Abstract: Applications of DC cooling fans in auto electronics cover a wide range of areas. Since they all need to meet the requirement of the clients in providing customized products, many product combinations have been developed. In the past, when DC cooling fans manufacturers have not implemented the requirements of TS16949 and the core tools, their developmental process could only meet the spirit of process-orientation suggested by ISO9001. There was an obvious deficiency in terms of the quality management tools during the development and manufacturing processes, as well as the development information that should be produced; therefore, they were unable to meet the requirements of TS16949. This study constructs a new product development (NPD) procedure through the application of the five core tools that meets the requirements of TS16949, and satisfies the characteristics of the DC cooling fans industry. With this process, the Taiwanese DC cooling fans industry can effectively control the entire production process, from sales and marketing, R&D, manufacturing, to customer services. Moreover, the manufacturers could not only elevate their ability to self-manage, but also meet the requirements and gain market shares in the international automobile supply chain.

Abstract: Considering the actual requirements of data and process management in agricultural machinery product design, a Windchill-based PDM system is proposed for agricultural chassis products design regarding its system architecture, data models and functional modules. Specific workflow models and data models are built to provide a collaborative platform for the product data management. It consists of seven major functional modules such as data management, data search, management of team, version and permission and system integration, etc. Its implementation methods will provide a useful guide and application for the agricultural machinery manufacturing enterprises to achieve rapid design of their products.

Abstract: In the today’s industry the sheet metal design plays a huge role, it has been said that almost the half of the designing is concentrating to sheet metals. But the lack of knowledge of the typical sheet metal aspects and basic rules of sheet metal designing, has led in to situation where more and more products are poor designed. This automatically leads to situation that the products are not manufacturing friendly. Designing time is shortening year after year, so the pressure to design the part as fast as possible is huge. Unfortunately all the design information and the design intent is processed and filtered to be fit for the Product Data Management (PDM) system. As the PDM was firstly designed to be used only for the storage base for the design drawings and other data; the feature-information and design intent is lost. This paper deals with two distinct yet interlinked themes. The first theme is the new requirements set for the new Product (Life-time) Information systems that can save the product information and design intent. And the second theme is the modern, light-weight and updatable product-services that allow the manufacturability to be ensured before product realization. With the help of novel product-service such as Design Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) for sheet metal industry designers will able to design in shorter time manufacture friendly sheet metal products.

Abstract: Aerospace product design is a complex and difficult process with high technical requirements and a tight development cycle involving a variety of institutes and manufacturers and requiring close collaboration. These features significantly increase the difficulty of configuration management for an aerospace product. Based on the characteristics and management requirements of new-generation aerospace product design, a method for configuration management with baseline is proposed. The application procedure and working mechanisms of baseline in the three typical stages of aerospace product design: stage transition, multi-stage parallel design, and multi-batch parallel design, are discussed in detail. Research and application results can provide a practical solution and concept for the effective and reliable management of complex configurations.

Abstract: Environmental norms and the combination of market mechanism has become an international trend in recent years, therefore green product design is an important research topic. In this paper, we apply product data management system to the R&D of bicycle as a product design management tools, products and components to be established a database in order to generate bill of material to facilitate the assessment, re-use evaluation software inventory of green bicycle main parts, and to provide of the green bicycle industry reference for the design.

Abstract: For promoting competitive advantages, many companies seek new ways to decrease costs in global markets. Information products contain more functionality, and their developments are continuous process to meet customer requirements. Developers have to manage and control a range of technology and increasing amount of product data. This research selects an old established enterprise named T-company in Taiwan as the subject. We found out 21 theoretical critical success factors (CSFs) from 6 case studies via three research and development departments of T-company. We pointed out 10 most important CSFs should be the critical point before and during the product data management implementation, which can be a reference model to executives of related electronic businesses.

Abstract: The team-members for the new product development (NPD) are recruited from different departments in the enterprises. So the team-members in the design teams range from novices to experts in NPD. The juniors developer in the design project team lack more successful product-design experiences as their seniority and skills. Therefore, those developers always query and search their problems with the limited terminology via the information systems or websites. So the results of the querying and searching always are limited to the similar domain-knowledge. The new product development (NPD) involves multidisciplinary knowledge such as accumulated experiences of knowledge-workers, and different technical and legal documents. The information systems (IS) facilitating the NPD processes often include document-based knowledge management system (KMS), Product Data Management (PDM), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems etc. With these different systems, novices at various stages of NPD processes often have problems to use the exact and suitable keywords to query the problems from those information systems. The study proposes a case-based reasoning to construct a hierarchical knowledge model to record knowledge-workers’ experiences and to store the information of experiences and the recommendation of experts. The aim of the study is that the proposed architecture can query the information scattered in different information systems by using their individual-domain terminology and retrieve the better fitted results of the querying.
