Abstract: Three kinds of reinforcing fillers (i.e. carbon black N330, carbon black N880 and carbon-white) were used to study effect of the reinforcing fillers on the mechanical properties of NBR materials. The NBR materials with various reinforcing fillers were fabricated, and the mechanical property tests were performed in this work. The results show that the carbon black N330 made the NBR material have better tensile strength, hardness, elongation and compression elastic modulus compared to the carbon black N880 and the carbon-white, while the carbon-white made NBR material have better heat resistance, tear strength and elongation compared to the carbon black N330 and the carbon black N880. In addition, the tensile strength, tear strength, elongation and the heat resistance property of the NBR materials increased significantly with the increase of the carbon-white, but the compression elastic modulus decreased with the increase of the carbon-white.

Abstract: Natural rubber is highly resilient and possesses many outstanding characteristics but inferior in aspects like modulus and hardness. This however can be improved by reinforcement, forming a composite. The rubber compound in this study was prepared according to the ASTM D3184 standards and reinforced using cellulose acetate (CA) from recycled cigarette filter, partly as an effort to reduce the amount of waste. Moreover, cigarette filter is highly toxic due to the nicotine content thus requires care when is recycled. From the rheological and mechanical testing conducted i.e. scorch and cure time, torque, tensile test and tear strength, it seems to indicate a small amount of up 4 phr (parts per hundred rubber) of CA, is beneficial in improving the properties of the rubber compound.

Abstract: Nanoclay gel was prepared using organoclay swollen and dispersed in agar which is the hydrocolloid. Bentonite clay was used for preparation of organoclay with quaternary ammonium salt by cationic exchange method. The organoclays loadings in nanoclay gel were 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt%. Results on X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed exfoliation structure and well dispersing developed. Moreover, the application of nanoclay gel as reinforcing filler in polylactic acid (PLA) prepared with melt extrusion process at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 wt%, respectively. The tensile properties and morphologies were observed. The tensile strength and the elongation at break increased with increasing the clay content up to 3 wt% and then slightly decreased at higher clay content. The modulus increased with increasing clay loading. The high degree of dispersion PLA/clay nanocomposites were observed with SEM micrographs.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reinforcement effect of the cuttlebone particle on the mechanical properties of natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates. The extraction of organic compound from the cuttlebone was prepared demineralization and deproteinization methods. The obtained chitin had been characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The mechanical and thermal properties of NR composite materials were investigated. The reinforcement effect of cuttlebone particle in NR composite was comparable with that of commercial CaCO3 as a reference. After thermal aging, the tensile properties of composite material were decreased. The presence of organic component was speculated to give a good interaction effect of cuttlebone particles to NR as revealed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
