Abstract: Ring Rolling is a complex hot forming process where different rolls are involved in the production of seamless rings characterized by extreme dimensions (i.e. external diameter higher more than 1m). Because each roll can be independently controlled from the other ones different speed laws must be set; usually, in the industrial environment, a milling curve is introduced to monitor the shape of the workpiece during the deformation in order to ensure a correct ring production. In former works the authors focused their attention on the influence of different milling curves for an industrial case and the results underlined that a ring produced with a good quality and lower loads and energy could be obtained imposing a linearly descending trend to the Idle roll speed law. However different approaches could be used in order to evaluate the mentioned speed law.In this work the authors enhanced the knowledge about the optimization of the Idle roll speed law: different Idle roll speed laws were designed and simulated and the results were compared in order to identify the best speed law that guarantees a good quality ring with lower loads and energy required for manufacturing.

Abstract: Ring Rolling is a complex hot forming process used for the production of shaped rings, seamless and axis symmetrical workpieces. The main advantage of workpieces produced by ring rolling, compared to other technological processes, is given by the size and orientation of grains, especially on the worked surface which give to the final product excellent mechanical properties. In this process different rolls (Idle, Axial, Guide and Driver) are involved in generating the desired ring shape. Since each roll is characterized by a speed law that can be set independently by the speed law imposed to the other rolls, an optimization is more critical compared with other deformation processes. Usually, in industrial environment, a milling curve is introduced in order to correlate the Idle and Axial roll displacement, however it must be underlined that different milling curves lead to different loads and energy for ring realization. In this work an industrial case study was modeled by a numerical approach: different milling curves characterized by different Idle and Axial roll speed laws (linearly decreasing, constant, linearly increasing) were designed and simulated. The results were compared in order to identify the best milling curve that guarantees a good quality ring (higher diameter, lower fishtail) with lower loads and energy required for manufacturing.

Abstract: To obtain the required plastic strain and desired tolerance values in the ring rolling process, it is necessary to control many factors. Major factors include the mandrel width, the rotation speed of driver roll, the feed ratio of mandrel, and the workpiece temperature. This study uses rigid-plastic finite element (FE) software to investigate the plastic deformation behavior of a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) workpiece under ring rolling. This study analyzes the damage factor distribution, the effective strain, the effective stress and the die radius load in the workpiece under various ring rolling conditions. We used the Taguchi method to determine the optimum design parameters. Results confirm the suitability of the proposed design process, which allows a ring rolling die to achieve a perfect design during finite element method.

Abstract: Microstructure evolution during ring rolling process of a large-scale Ti-6Al-4V ring was investigated with the combined approaches of three dimensional finite element method (FEM) simulation and microstructure prediction model. A microstructure prediction model was established by considering the volume fractions and grain size of  and  phases varying with process variables, and grain growth. In order to perform FE simulation for ring rolling process of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, a constitutive equation was generated by utilizing the flow stress data obtained from hot compression tests at different temperature and strain rate conditions. The volume fraction and grain size of  and  phases during ring rolling were calculated by de-coupled approach between FEM analysis and microstructure prediction model. The prediction results were compared with the experimental ones. Our proposed microstructure simulation module was useful for designing hot forming process of Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Abstract: Manufacturing processes of Ti-6Al-4V plane and profiled ring-products were investigated with three-dimensional FEM simulation and experimental analyses. FEM simulation for the ring-rolling process was used to calculate the state variables such as strain, strain rate and temperature. To induce the uniform deformation of the profile ring and reduce the applied load, the final blank was prepared by two-step processes. The mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy ring products made in this work were investigated with tensile and impact tests, and compared with the specification(AMS-T-81915).

Abstract: Non-stability factors affect stability of radial ring rolling process, and lead to fluctuating of ring position. This decreases rolling precision. Evaluating stability of the process is very important. A stability evaluating method is proposed. The stability can be measured with the mean square root of sequence of oscillation of ring geometrical centerline displacement. Using ABAQUS/Explicit, the stability is analyzed. It is showed that guide-roll position angle has the significant effect to the stability. If guide-roll is located at the tangential position to the ring’s fringe, the stability will vary with the angle between two planes. One passes through axes of guide roll and ring blank, and another passes through axes of drive roll and ring blank. The stability is highest when guide roll is situated at the position angle of 100˚to 130˚at exit side of ring rolling mill.
