Abstract: A large-scale cold model experimental setup of combined riser with variable constraint exit (CRVCE) was established. The axial and radial distributions of solids holdup and particle velocity, under different operating conditions, were investigated experimentally, and the results were compared with conventional riser (CR). Experimental results showed that, the exit restrictive effect of combined riser with variable constraint exit was weak when particle circulation flux and static bed height in upper fluidized bed were lower, while it turned to be strong when superficial gas velocity and static bed height in upper fluidized bed were higher. Under the same conditions, averaged cross-sectional solids holdup of CRVCE was characterized by C type distribution when article circulation flux was higher, while that of CR with weak constraint exit was characterized by linear distribution. In axial direction, averaged cross-sectional particle velocity of CRVCE changed in order: acceleration-constant-decrease velocity, while that of CR changed in another: acceleration-constant velocity. The maximum of local solids holdup value of CRVCE appeared at the dimensionless radius position r/R=0.7, while that of CR appeared in the wall region. Their local particle velocities were similar in the core region, while local particle velocity of CRVCE was lower than that of CR in the annular region.

Abstract: The experiment is carried out in a 13-meter-high circulating fluidized bed(CFB) to investigate gas-solid two-phase flow by pressure sensor. The axial pressure and pressure fluctuation are measured in different solid mass fluxes. With the solid mass flux increasing, pressure gradually increases, and pressure gradually decreases along the riser upwards. The characteristic of pressure fluctuation in the riser is analyzed, which indicates that pressure fluctuation in the riser originates from the inlet. The intensity of the pressure fluctuation decreases along the riser upwards. This pressure fluctuation is composed of two types: one is of low frequency and high amplitude, which is resulted from unstable feeding to the riser and keeps coherent along the axial direction. And the other is of high frequency and low amplitude, which is the result of a variety of factors, such as cluster movement, gas-solid interaction and gas velocity fluctuation.

Abstract: Numerical simulation of gas-solid two-phase flows in circulating fluidized bed is proved to be a low-cost and high-efficient method to research the instability essence of flow character. In this work, numerical simulation based on the discrete element (DEM) method is applied to analyze behaviors in a rectangular cross-section fluidized bed. The models of physical and mathematical models are introduced in detail, and the schematic of DEM method also described clearly. It indicates that the DEM method may be used as a powerful tool for the simulation of the gas-solid flow.

Abstract: The flow character in riser is important for deep understanding the steady and high-efficient running of CFBs. In this paper, the 2D numerical simulation research for bench-scale circular cross-section riser based on EMMS methods is carried out. The solids’ transient moving profiles are captured. By analyzing the axial solids concentration profiles by simulation and experimental methods, the practicability of the EMMS model is verified.

Abstract: The implementation of the kinetic theory for granular flows added strength to the two-phase flow model in the mini-riser. This model uses simulating and calculating commercial software of Fluent to simulate the mini-riser with 0.012m ID and 3m height. Euler-Euler two fluid model was adopted in two dimensional numerical simulation, according to kinetic theory, the solid stress was calculated based on granular temperature and granular viscosity obtained through simulation which could be used to describe the collision between particles. Simulation results, such as solid phase fraction and solid phase velocity, under different operational conditions basically agree well with the experimental measurement.

Abstract: Using the Gidaspow model as the momentum exchange coefficient to take a full-loop simulation of miniature circulating fluidized bed gasifier (CFBG) in the lab, and taking mutual influence of different parts in consideration, it focus on the gas-solid flow structure in the riser in this paper. The heterogeneous behavior in the CFBG riser and the radial profiles of solid volume fraction under different solid inventories in simulation are showed in this paper as a replenishment of certain data which are hard to measure in experiments. The results showed it can’t form an obvious core-annulus flow because of the riser’s high height-diameter ratio and the big refeed line diameter. There are clusters growing and dissipation in a short time. A turning point of pressure drop may be seem as a separation of dense area and dilute area. The three-dimensional (3D) simulation revealed the solid flux and the pressure drop agree with the experimental data.

Abstract: The measurement for riser’s solids concentration is important but difficult. So, a high-efficiency and low-cost new predicted method based on the least square SVM method is proposed. The superficial operated gas velocity Ug and solids circulation rate εs are chosen as the effect factors of the solids concentration. Furthermore, the multiple linear regression model (Linear) and artificial neural net model (ANN) are also used to compare with the SVM model. By analyzing the training time and error, it is proved the SVM model has higher prediction accuracy and forecasting efficiency, which is a better choice for the riser’s solids concentration prediction.

Abstract: Steel catenary risers (SCR) are used in deepwater oil and gas developments to transfer produced fluids from the seabed to surface facilities. SCRs can be subject to fatigue loading from a variety of sources including wave and tidal motion, vortex induced vibration (VIV) and operating loads. When the produced fluids are sour (ie contain water and H2S) higher fatigue crack growth rates (FCGR) are expected, and this can have a significant effect on defect tolerance. The aim of this paper is to provide guidance on the current best practice methods for performing engineering critical assessments (ECA) on internal surface breaking defects in SCRs operating in a sour environment and subject to VIV fatigue loads. Example ECA calculations are presented for circumferential girth weld flaws, based on the failure assessment diagram (FAD) approach within the framework of BS 7910 [1]. The influence of certain key input variables is demonstrated, including the FCGR, determined from recent sour test data generated as part of this research.
