Abstract: The model of three-span rotor-bearing system with three cracks in shaft supporting on the six sliding bearings was set up. The influences of crack faults to the responses of the rotor system were studied on numerical simulation. Along with the increase of the crack depth in first span, the main influence to the dynamic characteristics of the system is in the first span. Along with the increase of the crack depth in second span, the main influences to the response of first and third spans are in the region of critical rotate speed, and it to the second span is in the regions of critical and supercritical rotate speed. Along with the increase of the crack depth in third span, the main influences to the response of the three spans are in the region of critical rotate speed.

Abstract: Shaft fatigue crack is one of the most common defects in rotating equipment, due to its extensive operation with continuous heavy loads. Finding an efficient way to evaluate the true stiffness variation due to the crack rotation is the key step to develop both on-line and off-line crack diagnostic techniques. This study analyzed time-variant bending stiffness of elastic shafts with experimentally-induced fatigue, welding and wire cut transverse cracks. It was found that crack gap has a significant effect on the opening and closing behaviour of the transverse crack. As in the case of a cut crack, large crack gap could completely prevent the crack from closing during rotation. A fatigue crack without a clear gap shows a typical opening and closing behavior. Further, it remains fully closed within a small angular range and most of time it is partially closed. It was also observed that both switch and harmonic models cannot describe periodic stiffness variation well enough to represent the actual breathing function of the fatigue crack.

Abstract: In order to find the cause of the shaft crack appeared in a 600MW steam turbine generator, several measurements are taken. The shaft assembly consists of three parts: shrink-fitted coupling, shaft and key which are used to transfer torque between coupling and shaft. First, the natural frequency of the shaft system is calculated. The result shows that the vibration signal contains the frequency nears the second natural frequency of the steam turbine shaft system. Second, stress field near the damaged coupling and shaft is analyzed using finite element method. The torque under different operation condition is calculated before stress analysis and applied to the shaft assembly, then. And, local stress concentrations position calculated is proved to be coincident with the place crack initiation. Finally, the cause of the fault is analyzed: at least three causes have found to be having something to do with the crack fault.

Abstract: Understanding dynamic behavior of a rotor system with a transverse crack is of great significance for operation reliability of rotating machinery. The transfer matrix method is widely used for rotor dynamic analysis, but it encounters difficulties modeling a crack. This study proposes a finite-width crack model that simulates the local stiffness reduction effect of a gaping crack in transfer matrix method. This model is obtained by comparing finite element analysis results of a shaft with a zero-width crack and its counterpart transfer matrix calculation results with a trial equivalent finite-width slot. Different shaft geometry and loading modes are considered to improve the generality of the model. An application example is given that uses the proposed model to calculate critical speeds of a multi-disk rotor system with a transverse crack at different positions.
