Abstract: Flat specimen of 316L steel was cyclically pre-deformed with constant plastic strain amplitude to early stage of fatigue life relevant to the period of cyclic strain localization and fatigue crack initiation. To document slip activity and reversibility/irreversibility of persistent slip bands (PSBs) in situ experiments in the high-resolution SEMFEG under special imaging conditions were performed. The half-and full-cycle slip activity and distribution of plastic strain within PSBs in individual grains were investigated via slip steps generated in half-and full-cycle deformation after intermediate vibration polishing. After completion of in situ tests the surface topography in identical locations was quantitatively documented using atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Abstract: Cyclic slip irreversibility is one of the most important features of fatigue processes in ductile metals because it induces surface relief evolutions during cycling which are mainly responsible for crack initiation. The reversible and irreversible parts of the slip within persistent slip bands (PSBs) in polycrystalline nickel are measured directly after half-cycle deformation and one full cycle on specimen surfaces once more well-polished after 60% of fatigue life using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and different techniques of scanning electron microscopy as electron channelling contrast imaging and electron backscattered diffraction. Using AFM measures on the same slip steps after half-cycle and full cycle, the cyclic slip irreversibility factor is directly evaluated and discussed with respect to the literature.

Abstract: Multiple forging (MF) can be used to attain large plastic strains in bulk alloys by successive forging along three orthogonal directions to retain the initial sample shape. An original multiple forging technique enabling 3-D cross forging at constant temperature up to 500°C has been applied to two Al alloys (Al-1%Mn and Al-3%Mg-Sc,Zr). Their rheology, texture and microstructure evolution are compared with those obtained in plane strain compression (PSC). The results are interpreted in terms of slip activity behaviour during both deformation modes. They can also be correlated with the contributions of free dislocations and sub-boundaries.

Abstract: The crystallographic slip activity in several grains deformed by simple tension is determined by use of in-situ deformation in combination with Electron Back Scattering Diffraction (EBSD)-investigations and Secondary Electron (SE) imaging. This technique is also used to determine grain lattice rotation paths of grains with different initial orientation, providing information on basic deformation mechanisms of grains present in texture gradients. Both slip activity and grain lattice rotation paths depend on the initial orientation and are influenced by the neighbouring grain orientations. This indicates that predictions of the forming behaviour of extruded profiles with a strong through thickness texture gradient relate to a very complex nature.
