Abstract: A novel edge treatment method that utilizes a tip-burnishing process with an active rotary tool developed by the authors was proposed. Two types of burnishing process experiments were conducted using the tip-burnishing process to deburr the workpiece edge and create a sharp cutting edge. Furthermore, an evaluation test for the cutting performance of the sharp edge, which was treated using the developed burnishing process, was conducted. In the deburring experiment, superior deburring was achieved by generating a sliding effect orthogonal to the burr generation direction. An experiment was conducted for evaluating the sharpening of the cutting edge; it was observed that the cutting-edge angle decreased due to the burnishing process. A cutting performance test was conducted using a wedge-shaped workpiece before and after burnishing. The cutting performance of the workpiece was quantitatively evaluated based on the load and stroke required for the cutting of the sheet material.

Abstract: This paper provides a framework for the transcription of the surface of a mirror-finished die onto a metal plate by friction stir forming (FSF). In FSF, a material is put on a die, then friction stirring was conducted on its back surface for the transcription of the profile of the die onto the material. In this paper, a mirror-polished die of JIS SUS304 stainless steel with surface roughness Sz 0.014 mm and a probe-less friction-stirring tool in 18 mm shoulder diameter were employed for the experiment. A5083P-O aluminum plates, 3 mm thick, were utilized as base metals for the transcription. The authors varied tool spindle speed and tool feed rate to evaluate the forming results. Consequently, a mirror-finished surface under the friction-stirring tool was successfully transferred from the die to the aluminum alloy plate. The roughness of the base metal before processing was Sz 0.022 mm and that of the processed metal was Sz 0.012–0.016 mm. Higher spindle speed and faster feed rate resulted in a smoother surface; it is thought that high spindle speed and faster feed rate should be effective for higher contact pressure between a die and a material.

Abstract: In this paper the mathematical model and the program based on this model for efficient process conditions during a diamond smoothing is introduced. The mathematical model has been tested with heatproof martensite category steel FeC0.15Cr12Ni2 by the synthetic diamond DSB-1 using as a smoothing tool. The mathematical model takes into account plastic deformation degree which could have both smoothing and reinforcing nature. Through the smoothing conditions the surface has a microroughnesses crumpling but reinforcing conditions involve also surface layer microhardness increasing.

Abstract: We report on an ambitious project in the field of automation, applied to bound and free abrasive processing of precision and ultra-precision surfaces, with potentially far-reaching consequences. This involves two main aspects:- directly processing surfaces using industrial robots, and combining robots with Zeeko CNC polishing machines to automate operations that are currently manual. These form steps towards our ultimate vision of the Integrated Manufacturing Cell for bespoke optics rather than mass-produced, and manufacture of other precision surfaces including prosthetic joint implants. Projects such as the European Extremely Large Telescope provide a relevant case study, where significant numbers of high-value bespoke optics are required.

Abstract: Metal forming smoothing processes are used to improve the surface quality of soft materials or of those materials that must withstand extreme fatigue and wear conditions. This paper highlights the influence of the main technological parameters upon the deformation force, as well as upon the hardness and the roughness of the processed surface.

Abstract: The contribution deals with the investigation of the influence of facet size and smoothing on the results obtained by low-speed digital image correlation (DIC) system by strain analysis performed on specimen with a small hole loaded by tension loading. In conclusion the obtained results are verified by a numerical solution using finite element method.

Abstract: This paper describes the application of loose-abrasive processes to the manufacture of 1.4 meter, off-axis aspheric, hexagonal mirror-segments. These are prototypes for the 39 m European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The application of active forces to correct the overall form of segments in the telescope, means that the overall form-accuracy achieved in polishing can be less critical than for a non-active mirror. However, it is a requirement that the base-radii and conic constants of mirror-segments are very closely matched, so that the combined image is not degraded. This means that abrasive processes have to operate with respect to an absolute rather than relative datum. Furthermore, there are stringent requirements on mid-spatial frequency defects on segment surfaces, and on edge-roll. These control stray-light, and ultimately detectability of faint astronomical targets. We describe the CNC abrasive techniques we have developed in response. We then demonstrate the success of the approach, which represents the first time ever that segments have been processed entirely in the hexagonal shape:- a milestone in loose-abrasive processing. Finally, we address up-scale for the unprecedented number of segments required for the E-ELT build-phase.

Abstract: In order to overcome the defects that the face recognition rate can be greatly reduced in the existing uncontrolled environments, Bayesian robust coding for face recognition based on new dictionary was proposed. In this proposed algorithm, firstly a binary image is gained by gray threshold transformation and a more clear image without some isolated points can be obtained via smoothing, secondly a new dictionary can be reconstructed via fusing the binary image with the original training dictionary, finally the test image can be classified as the existing class via Bayesian robust coding. The experimental results based on AR face database show that the proposed algorithm has higher face recognition rate comparison with RRC and RSC algorithm.

Abstract: A thermogravimetric system was designed, in which a large amount of sample (about 10 g) can be examined. Test of the combustion characteristics of cooking oil tar in pipe was conducted. Wavelet transform was introduced to the thermogravimetric data smoothing and differentiation analysis according to the experiment results, and the orthogonal test method was used to find the optimize wavelet parameter. Wavelet transform results were compared to the traditional Moving average,Gaussian Smoothing and Vondrak smoothing methods and it was proved that the signal-to-noise ratio () of the measurement is increased significantly. The kinetic parameters calculated from the original TG curves and smoothed DTG curves have excellent agreement, and thus the wavelet transform smoothing algorithms can be used directly and accurately in kinetic analysis.

Abstract: Remote sensing image registration system has been widely applied for agriculture, forestry, geology, ocean, meteorology, hydrology and military field, which studies image correction, enhancement and registration based on digital image processing technology. This paper presents system design and realization of registration technology for remote sensing image. Remote sensing image has geometric distortion and needs digital correction by adopting polynomial method at first. Then five kinds of technology are offered to enhance the contrast of remote sensing image including histogram enhancement, grey level transformation enhancement, image smoothing, image sharpening and pseudo color enhancement. Image geometric registration algorithm is carried out to fuse images of the same area acquired at different times on different wave band at last. Test result shows that the method presented has good accuracy and quick speed for realtime application.
