Abstract: Four kinds of Mg-Al-Sr alloys of Sr/Al mass ratio between 0.0~1.0 were made in the vacuum resistor furnace. The effect and effect mechanical of the ratio on phase and microstructure were studied by OM, XRD, SEM and EDS and DTA. Results showed that metallographic images of alloys changed and the microstructures were refined with different Sr/Al ratio. By analysis that can be known that precipitation phases include mainly Al4Sr and Al4Sr which varied from the Sr/Al ratio.

Abstract: The addition of strontium to Mg-Al based alloys offers good creep resistance to meet the material requirements for automotive applications. The composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Al-Sr alloys are discussed in this paper. The effects of alloy elements such as Ca, Ti and Mn in Mg-Al-Sr alloy are summarized. Technologies for preparation of Mg-Sr master alloy were developed, including mixture method and vacuum thermal reduction method which may also be used for preparation of Mg-Al-Sr alloys.
