Abstract: Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) and high entropy alloys (HEAs) have unique structures at the length scales of micro- and nano-metre, and exhibit unique properties, which make them potential materials for structural applications. The tensile ductility of dendrite/BMG composites can be greatly improved by Bridgman solidification. The BCC structured HEA with a composition of Ti0.5AlCoCrFeNi exhibits ultrahigh fracture strength which is competitive to most of the BMGs, moreover, the strength can be sustained at high temperatures. The phase changes of HEAs are closely related to the atomic packing efficiency (APE).

Abstract: The grain sizes of two kinds of orthorhombic alloys, namely (O+B2) Ti-22Al-11Nb-2Mo -1Fe and (O+2) Ti-27.5Al-13Nb have been successfully reduced by the addition of trace boron (B) (less than 0.12 wt.%). For example, the grain size in the B2 solution-treated condition was reduced from 1 mm to 80 m by the addition of 0.05% B for both alloys. The tensile elongation of Ti-22Al-11Nb-2Mo-1Fe at room temperature and 650C was increased from 0.3% to 4.3%, and from 8.2% to 30.3%, respectively, by the addition of 0.10% B. Ti-27.5Al-13Nb also showed an improved room temperature ductility by the minor B addition.

Abstract: The effects of B addition up to 0.4 wt% (i.e., 1.61 at%) to Fe-40Al alloy on microstructures and tensile properties were investigated. The vacancy-annealed specimens following casting and extrusion were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy and thermal neutron-induced microradiography. The addition of a large amount of B resulted in grain refinement and changed the fracture mode from intergranular to transgranular to increase the tensile elongation. Especially, the alloy containing 0.3wt% B exhibited the elongation of 16.4% under the strain rate of 1x100s-1 at room temperature. The increase in elongation with increasing strain rate was discussed in terms of suppression of hydrogen embrittlement.
