Abstract: This paper experiments on typical Malan loess, performs consolidated quick direct shear tests under different water contents by conventional direct shear apparatus, then analyzes the effects of water content on shearing strength parameters, namely cohesion and internal friction angle. The results show that cohesion decreases linearly as the water content increasing, and the relation could be obtained by data fitting. However, internal friction angle keeps basically stable with the increase of water content. Finally, based on the force analysis for micro particles, the changing rules of cohesion and internal friction angle with water content were deeply explained.

Abstract: In order to explore the disintegration characteristics of compacted loess, through the unsaturated soil disintegration instrument by independently developed,conduct the soaking disintegration experimental study on remolded soil unsaturated samples,obtained a series of experimental results:①The curves can be divided into the slow disintegration, rapid disintegration and stabilization of disintegration in three stages,the degree of compaction and water rate impact on rapidly disintegrating stage;②When the degree of compaction is certain,the disintegration rate decreased with the water contented increasing,the decreased amplitude is increasing with the moisture content increased to18%,the disintegration characteristics disappeared with the moisture content increased to 22%;③When the initial moisture content is certain, the disintegration rate decreased with the degree of compaction increasing, The time significantly prolonged when the disintegration completed. the decreased amplitude is increasing with the degree of compaction increased to 95%,the disintegration characteristics basically disappeared. Based on the relationship of degree of compaction and the moisture content to void ratio, the thesis establishes the model between the disintegration rate and the effective porosity ratio,the formula can be used to calculate the disintegration rate of compacted loess.The specific conclusions are:①When the critical moisture content increased to 22%,the disintegration characteristics disappeared;②When the critical degree of compaction increased to95%,the disintegration characteristics also disappeared.

Abstract: Rainfall and the water leak frequently causes the unsaturated loess slope landslide and the foundation destruction. The theoretical analysis was accomplished, then a two dimensional water seepage calculation model for loess foundation was established. It realized the forecast for the water content change of loess soil. Combined with an example, the calculating program was compiled by Matlab. The result confirmed the effectiveness and rationality of the method and model.

Abstract: The shear strength value of unsaturated loess is required in the design in geotechnical engineering in the North and the North West of China. In 2004, a new method, that is the fractal model theory, was proposed for determining the shear strength of unsaturated soil. Based upon the fractal model theory, the surface fractal dimension DS and the air entry value of two unsaturated loess samples are obtained from their soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC), the shear strength contribution due to matric suction of the two loess samples is determined, a new approach for determination of the shear strength of unsaturated loess with its SWCC is presented. By comparing results of this paper with those of the laboratory tests, the relationship between the SWCC and the shear strength of unsaturated loess is discussed and the validity of the fractal model theory for unsaturated loess is explained.
