Abstract: In the machine tool manufacturing industry, most of the design is based on previous experience and cases. However, some parts in the machine are complex and hard to modify for reuse. In this paper, CBR integrated with variant design is proposed to accelerate the knowledge reuse process. The experience and the cases are saved in the case base, and the similarity of the cases includes the parameters and structure. The revise process is using the proposed variant design to modify the case, and we mainly talking about the process on the construction of the functional relationship, which is the key steps of the variant design. Finally, we build a rapid design system for milling machine. The application indicate that the approach for complex parts design are useful and promising in intelligent design process in terms of shorter design time and more intelligent process.

Abstract: In order to solve the problem that design resources can not be effectively reused, variant design is used in engineering field. Knowledge is the key factor implementing strategy of variant design. This paper puts forward the knowledge classification, process model, information resource base and reasoning model for variant design. Knowledge of variant design is classified into product domain knowledge, variant design methodology and basis theory knowledge, variant design process combines top-down mode to bottom-top mode, its corresponding information resource base includes case base, knowledge base and database. CBR is the core for design reasoning. The frame of knowledge-based variant design system includes resource base, resource management, variant design and evaluation subsystem. Using the system, designer could reuse design resource and reduce developing cost.

Abstract: Customers’ individual and rapid product customization demands for 2K-V series reducers are taken as the study background. The rapid modeling method of the product skeleton and the parametric design method of the product level are studied. Products’ assembly models and templates of products’ skeleton models for series products are created on the basis of analyzing the structure similarity. Through changing parameters’ values of the skeleton template the product’s assembly model can be updated automatically and this template is rapidly transformed to the product instance so as to realize the rapid variant design. The above method not only is effective to 2K-V series reducers but also has reference value to others series products’ design.

Abstract: To support rapid design of longitudinal roadheader’s cutting unit better, an approach for product variant design based on parametric modeling was presented. According to the function and structure of longitudinal roadheader’s cutting unit, this paper partitioned the function modules of cutting unit and analyzed its parametric models by using theory and key technologies of variant design method. On the basis of the existing 3D models, variant design of geometry shape features, main parts and assemblies of longitudinal roadheader’s cutting unit had implemented through re-development on Computer-Aided Design platform. It proves that the variant design method can accelerate product design process, reduce costs for product design and ensure the quality of product design. And the instantiation could be as a reference of similar product’s rapid design.

Abstract: As is known to all, new mechanical product design is always on the basis of the original product, so to better use the exiting design resource, a mechanical product variant design method is presented. The new method is based on SML and parameter CAD. According to different geological conditions of coal mine, different types of hydraulic support are needed to design. So as a typical kind of mechanical product, hydraulic support is given as an example to demonstrate the new variant design method. Finally with SOLIDWORKS as a specific application object, integrated with SQLServer2000 database, a hydraulic support variant design system is realized by Visual Basic program, which shortens the cycle of mechanical product development and reduces duplication mechanical design greatly.

Abstract: Component variant design method based on parametric design technology and parametric CAE technology are discussed. Based on the integration of CAD and CAE, a variant design method with the function to satisfy engineering constraints is put forward. Using VC++ and Jscript as developing tools, CAD system (SolidWorks) and CAE system (ANSYS) are redeveloped and integrated. A variant design method based on the integration of CAD/CAE is realized. A prototype system of the above variant design method is developed. As an example, variant design of workbench of a machine tool is realized. The variant design method and the variant design prototype system are verified.

Abstract: By applying biological pedigree concept into product conceptual structure design, an conceptual structural design approach is set forth to make full use of creative and innovative intelligence of living systems for design automation. According to the relationship between different product structures with same function, the classification model of product pedigree is established, which can be used as unified functional isomorphic model during the intelligent conceptual design process. On the other hand, according to the evolutional logic from quality change to quantities change, pedigree based product evolutionary design strategy is given. Product pedigrees which are homology dependent are used as basic evolutionary models, based on which, the parameter based, interaction field based and interaction mater based evolutional conceptual design method are proposed, respectively. Based on the relation network of the pedigree units, multiple variant design schemes can be obtained, which is a strong backbone to the innovative design process. Finally, design examples are used to demonstrate the successful application of the proposed pedigree based evolutionary method in the product variant design.

Abstract: Variant design is the main form of most manufacturing enterprises. In this paper, an extensible modular method is proposed to enable better and faster design. The structure module is set size inner-related, and then when the user requirements change, the key structural variables can be adjusted followed by the alterations of the driven sizes, also these alterations can be verified by the engineering analysis. Therefore, the product variant design process can be preceded effectively with the extensible modules.

Abstract: Characteristic part family definition, part family master model feature diagram and XML stored document of master model are given for product variant design. Then, variant design process of part family is elaborated, including searching similar parts and the similarity retrieval mechanism which are studied for the product variant design of part family. Finally, the standard part family and business part family are developed through Java, Pro/E, SQL Server and an example on product variant design is given to testify the validity of characteristic part family and similarity retrieval mechanism.

Abstract: Variant design has already become the focus of digital design, and modular design is the foundation for realizing variant design. To realize variant design for a certain class of milling planer, according to the analysis of the characteristics and developing situation of milling planer, a modular design method orienting to variant design is presented in this paper. Functional independence of module should be the first priority in the method; then the structural independence. By using the method of system analysis, combining with parameters and type spectrum of series of products, module division is successfully implemented on milling planer. The feasibility of this method is verified by experiments. The ability to respond to the market of this product has been improved significantly.
