Numerical Analysis of Sea Ice-Bridge Pier Interaction

We report numerical simulations of the interactions between sea ice and the off-sea bridge pier by using the explicit dynamic analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The simulated propagation of cracks in ice, ice force, and bridge pier displacement response are consistent with both theoretical and field experimental results. We find that the displacement response is not sensitive to the variations of the ice velocity, while the ice force is approximately inverse linear proportional to the ice velocity.
