Abstract: In conceptual mechanical design process, designers sometimes focus their attentions on mapping a sub-function or functional unit to a single mechanism or system, and ignore the interfaces among the structural elements. This paper first summarized the behavioral characteristic of the interfaces in energy, mechanics, kinematics by analyzing the roles, classification and connection styles of such interfaces. Subsequently, it introduced the concepts of function and free surface, and gave the interface design process. Finally, a case study was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed methodologies.

Abstract: Assembly devices are important in manufacturing systems. To study their conceptual design methodologies, it is necessary to investigate their behavioral process characteristics. In this paper, the behavioral processes exhibited by some assembly devices were studied, from which we discovered the so-called “phenyl-loop behaviors” with some unique characteristics. Some specific rules were subsequently proposed to help identify these behaviors, and their usefulness for conceptual design was also discussed. A structure-behavior database was set up based on existing assembly devices and a design platform was constructed for assembly devices design.

Abstract: An effort is made to give a description of a computer-aided conceptual design system. A novel Function-Action-Behavior-Mechanism (FABM) modeling framework is proposed to realize mapping from the overall function to principle solution according to customer’s requirements. Expansion and modification rules in the demand behavior are developed to extend the innovation of principle solution. A case study on pan mechanism design for cooking robot is presented to show the procedure of how to implement the intelligent reasoning based on the FABM model.

Abstract: Consistency maintenance is a key problem in collaborative product design. Firstly, based on product design theory, the semantics relationships described by XML among components in collaborative product design system are made. Secondly, the associated components are determined through backward and forward semantics reasoning. Finally, the data is updated by constraints solving, and the consistency maintenance is achieved.

Abstract: System fault behavior model is a behavioral model to describe the occurrence and development process of system fault. It can reliaze fault propagation through the description of system normal and fault behavior. The application of system fault behavior model was studied in this paper. The method of FMEA and FTA based on system fault behavior model was brought forward and the process and steps of this method were discussed in detail. Finally, a typical case was analyzed to validate the effectiveness and practicness of this method.
