The elastic stability of dislocations was considered with regard to the formation of jog pairs on a straight dislocation, as well as kink-pair formation. Known dislocation configurations in annealed and deformed microstructures were consistent with predictions which were based upon elastic instability. The difference in formation enthalpy, between a jog pair and a kink pair, was obtained and the activation enthalpy was deduced for a jog-pair pinning mechanism for edge dislocations. Attention was paid to the driving forces for pinning mechanisms, including the role of inhomogeneous internal stress in FeAl single crystals.
