Scanning tunnelling microscopy was used to study the c(8 x 2) reconstruction of (100). High-resolution images revealed that this surface was composed of equal numbers of As and Ga atoms, and this observation helped to resolve disagreements in the interpretation of previous experiments. The c(8 x 2) structure arose from an ordered arrangement of (4 x 2) sub-units; with each sub-unit containing two As dimers and two Ga dimers.
