The (110) surfaces were observed  in situ  by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy during cooling to room temperature, after annealing at 720C. These observations led to the interesting finding that 2 x 16 and c(8 x 10) structures, which were agreed to be reconstructed structures of clean Ge(110) surfaces, were quite different in symmetry but had a rather similar geometrical relationship to each other with regard to their atomic structure.
