An X-ray standing-wave technique which involved the detection of surface-sensitive Auger electrons was used to study the reconstruction of clean (110) surfaces. By using the back-reflection diffraction geometry of (220) planes, the perpendicular displacements of the surface P and In atoms were found to be 0.018 and -0.048nm, respectively; as compared with the unrelated positions in the bulk.
