A general scheme was proposed for the classification of 7 x 7 domain boundaries on Si(111). By applying this scheme to data which had been obtained by using scanning tunnelling microscopy, the general properties of atomic structures on Si(111) were derived. In particular, the possibility of dimer-row driven reconstruction mechanisms was ruled out.
