It was recalled that the structure of the (113) face was of great interest because of its high stability; in spite of its high Miller index. There was some controversy concerning the nature of its reconstruction, and both 3 x 1 and 3 x 2 structures had been reported. Here, atomic resolution scanning tunnelling microscopic images of this surface were obtained which revealed areas of 3 x 1 reconstructed surface that matched the predictions of a previously proposed model. Other data were obtained which revealed a complex underlying reconstruction.
